Need help selecting MP4 player for 13yr old boy.

So I need to suggest to a family member for an MP4 player & I know (I think) that iPod and Sansa can play MP4's, but maybe there are more??

And, is MP4 more video oriented??? (I dunno just yet if the kid's lookin' more for video or not, but let's assume for now that video is important).

The Zune can play MPEG-4 Videos and .M4A Audio tracks as well.

I just picked up a new 1st gen 30gb Zune for $100 and love it.

the 2nd gen zune is looks really cool and has a feature set I believe is better than the ipod classic. The sansa is also a good audio player but if your going to have videos on it you may be a little limited by small flash mem. The Creative zen vision m is a very good mp3 player from my experience with great audio and video quality and it is very cheap right now, I loved mine until it broke just recently since I had it in my backpack when working out in our school's weight room it probably got a little crushed but my brothers held up fine.

Heck even the original Zune had a better feature set than the ipod classic didn't it? Wireless FTW.

Zen Vison:M. Quite cheap these days. Is has one of the best movie compatibility of anything I've used. I haven't had to convert anything... wmv, xvid, divx, it's all worked fine.

ipod nano/classic is the way to go...or get the new zune 80GB or the small nano sized zunes that are 8GB.

your choice. either way, you cant go wrong. i'd recommend an ipod though, cause its easy to use/everyone has one, etc...thats not to say that the zune pales in comparison because it doesnt (in fact, zunes have fm tuners which the ipods dont have and is an optional remote extra)...i KNOW for a fact that most, no all of the people ive seen/know if have an ipod and wouldnt even think about getting zune.

That's because in between straightening their turtlenecks, adjusting their berets and sipping coffee at fourbucks they only sneer in contempt at anything not apple.

I think apple makes a lot of swell products. But for an mp3 player I like choice in my formats. WMA is pretty agnostic, high fidelity and of low size, and also works with my media center & 360.

Older thread, but I thought I'd post something about iPods. I've had 4 ipods, a 2nd gen, a Ipod Video 30GB, an Ipod Nano, a 2nd gen Ipod nano. Of the 4 2 of them have gone bad after the warranty period expired. Since I am not under warranty and require service apple charges me $129 to fix it plus $7 shipping each way. That's almost the price of a brand new iPod. Who in their right mind would pay that outrageous amount for an old product when for about $50 more you can buy a brand new (newer generation too) iPod or something else?

My advice, don't buy Apple products. They rip you off. Personally my next purchase will be the new Zune 80GB. It's the same price as the 80GB IpoD classic, but has wiFi, an FM Tuner built in, and much much better headphones. The screen is larger as well. I also feel that the scroll wheel on the ipod is not as easy to use as the Zune's.

If you're curious about what happened with my ipods, the center button is broken on one and no longer functions. The other one crashed while trying to transfer songs to it and now it shows an erased HDD and iTunes just freezes when I try to plug it in so I can not reset it per Apple's recommendation. It's a paperweight unless I want to pay nearly $150 to repair it. Which I won't do when I can spend a bit more and have something better IMO.

Just thought I'd share that.

iPods are the stylish thing to get. However, I would get something that has more features personally. I love my 2GB Sansa, especially with the Rockbox software on it.

iPod is just a fad. If everyone saw how great the Zune is (better audio quality by far) they'd realize how horribly Apple is ripping people. That's my opinion though.

I just got my 80GB Zune today and I can safely say that it's 100% better than any iPod I've owned.

Cool points lol...

That's why I laugh at the iPod. Everyone buys it because it's cool, but in reality it's not as good as other options. The interface on the Zune is better than the iPod. The way I look at it is that Apple started something with the iPod that nobody else tried or had at the time. Since then other options have come out that are on par or in many cases better than what Apple offers.

If you want to look cool then fine, but if you want something that actually works right then I'd look elsewhere. iTunes is horrible software as far as running it on a PC is concerned.

Don't buy into the WiFi on the Zune is does absolutely nothing as it is only meant to do device to device file transfer. Where as the Ipod Touch can do web browsing, and is a very slick design. Though I dount you're looking to pay $300 for one.

8GB isn't even enough for my music collection, screw that.

Not to mention the iTouch has issues similar to the iPhone where the touch screen loses sensitivity or freezes completely.

Apple is milking you guys for all they can, keep feeding them go ahead.

Oh and the wifi can sync your Zune with your library without wires if you wanted.
