Which cpu would best meet this usage?

Office PC with Windows XP hosting a childcare center db. Only the one host and a single client pc modify the db. My guess is this db is based on something like MS Access.

Right now there's an Athlon XP cpu (single core) and the peripheral pc is kinda sluggish. I suspect the "server" may respond faster with more cores but I don't know if it should be an Athlon II or Phenom II (X4, X3 or X2). Forget about unlocking cores or overclocking.

Include some MS Word usage at the host's chair, but no internet.

ms access data bases are not mult threaded so don't worry about cores.

More than likely it's sluggish from xp needing a reload.

That's not very much to run on newer hardware being hardware guys people seem to think anything that has a database is super high end and it isn't.

Anything thing new will run great in that setup I'd go low power for something that runs cool and won't need much cooling.

Phenom II is AMD's top teir chip with the most cache right now and you'd probably last a bit longer without need for an upgrade, but for what you're doing either would suffice. I really can't say if the added cache would have any tangible impact on your day care ... but I can tell you that going from an athlon xp means you'll double the clock speed which WILL help with the sluggishness ..., if you maintain your file systems that is.

I'd focuse more on your storgage and memory config.
