need help selecting a new hd, What would you recommend?

I was looking at upgrading my 20 gig hard drive on my Gateway 450. I mainly use it for internet, buss Apps, watching dvd(the reason for wanting a bigger hd) and rarely games.

I was looking at the Toshiba MK5024GAY this oneis a 7200 with 16mb buffer or the IBM/Hitachi Travelstar 60GB 7200RPM also a 7200 with 8mb buffer. I see most people using the travelstar any reason for not using the toshiba?

any other drive to look at. To me it seems the toshiba is a better deal.

10 gb less, but...your right, its a great deal. but, the reason it isnt used alot is because vendors dont offer it. you have to buy it seperately = $$$.
the hitachi however, is used by vendors.

becasue the toshiba just came out.

I had the 7K60 but it has slightly audible idle noise and took off like 45min to 1hr of my battery life so I returned it.

Well I have the Hitachi and it's whisper quiet and I have no change in battery life
so I think it's to each their own.

So is the Hitach worth the extra $60 or do you think I should try out the toshiba? will the extra 8mb make a difference?

Looks like I'll have 2 I just can't see how 7200 and 16mb buffer can be bad. but any one with one please let me know what you think. Do the spec look good to everyone?

battery life. thats the only weakness of high-end laptop drives.

I'm getting almost 2 hr with hard use(virsue scaning, defraging, ect..) how bad of a hit will I take ? 10 mins 20? should I think of getting the larger battery(8cell vs my 6) at the same time?

Checkout www.x1000forums.com. There have been several forum members that have used both the Toshiba and Hitachi high speed drives. The general concensus is it is one of the best performance gains for the buck on their laptops. Both drives offer significant performance gains with little battery life lost. It really hasn't been settled if the Hitachi is "worth" the extra $50, but it is considered a higher quality drive over the Toshiba. I am also trying to decide which one to get. GP

Though I don't have experience with 7200RPM drives I have used 5400RPM drives from both Toshiba and IBM/Hitachi. I highly prefer the Toshiba. The IBM/Hitachi was significantly louder and seemed slower. Also The IBM/Hitachi died which is why I got the Toshiba. I've had a few too many IBM drives die on me. So for the time being I'm recommending Toshiba drives.
