Hey, this isn't my problem but my brothers. The thing is my bro hs been missing 5-10 bucks here and there for the past month and he thinks that his new roomate has been going through his things. He doesn't want to say or do anyhting until he catches his red handed. So What I want to do to help him and setup a web cam aiming at my bros half of the room to catch his roomate in the act. Can you guys/gals help me out? I was gonna tell him to pick up a Logitech Quick cam for around 60 but I don't know what software to use that will record for 5+ hours. Any help is appreciated, thanks.

If your brother is worrying about his stuff being stolen, why doesn't he just keep his money with him?
That, or he can go rent or borrow a video camera and will not have to worry about having the computer on or anything.

As I recall Logitech used to include a motion sensitive recording program on the software disk. Least with my Quickcam Home, three years old? Maybe four. Do it that way and it wouldn't be recording all the time, be a lot easier to check what's been recorded. You don't want to be searching through five hours of recording more than about once in a lifetime. Choices are to sit and watch it or skip/ff and end up missing what you meant to record.

Thanks buddy, you got your post in.

Anyway, Tahnks for all the links and info. Yeah those camera's are really neat :)

McCarthy- Thanks for cluing me in on that, that'll make things a lot easier for him. He has limited disk space.

I don't know why he doesn't keep all of his money on himself, but he said he keeps his money in a "hiding spot" and thats where the few $$ is missing from sometimes. Oh well, I'll have to hook up his room now to see if we can catch this guy :) Thanks again for you help.

what if he decicdes to take the whole clock radio w/ him rofl!

That's ok because he'll be recorded doing the dastardly deed! BUSTED!

Wireless cam+AP+200GB 1394HD = lots of evidence. The Logitech MX700 cradle makes a nice camera location! :)

The only downside I saw what that the cheapest of these are $97.00. Anybody ever seen those advertisements for that little X10 camera? What about something like that? They are also wireless, very small (easy to hide), and cost a lot less than $97.00.

*goes to website and comes back*

Doh! Nope, they cost about the same ($79.00): x10 Camera

You can do this:

Get the cheapest PC camera you can buy, doesn't have to be high quality. I've seen Intel, Creative & Logitech software and they all have something that allows you to take time delay pictures, or motion sensitive pictures. They can compress the video or just take pictures. They can also be set to not "show that they are on and watching". (i.e. some will have a light on or something similiar). He may want to try this approach first, because both links above will take you to something a lot more professional and a lot more expensive. Might it still be worth it to catch a thief? I would probably do it, but I'm one of those kind of people that wouldn't actually mind someone keying my vehicle, as long as I could catch them in the act. Oh, the payback would more than make up for it. :)

Wouldn't it be easier to just borrow and hide a mini DV? Great audio and pic . . . unless he is worried about the camera being stolen.

If so, you need to learn how to hide the camera . . . Google search is your amigo. ;)

Crank up your scanner and make a few fakes and let him steal those. When they disappear call the cops and report him as a counterfitter.

Hmm...unless he'll use the camera for something else....here's something you might try, I use it as a way to see if anyone's been in my house (or could still be, except I use a $20) Place a $5 bill conspicuosly in two places (say on top of the toilet and on top of the TV) kind of crumpled up, or whatever to make them think your just setting it there. Then see if it disappears. Costs less than a camera.
