Hi all im trying to take off my cpu but it is stuck to the hsf that came to it. Its looks like it is super glued. How the hell do i get it off? There is gray paste around it but it wont budge. The paste seems like it is moist and is on my fingers. It was the monarch computer bundle for amd. It is a opteron 165. I want to get it off the HSF to replace it. Please tell me how i can get it off without dmging the cpu.

Im 99% sure they didnt use thermal epoxy.........so with the right amount of force it will come off.

Just to add a little safety and gentleness to it, try using a hair dryer (blowing directly onto the heatsink) for about 5 minutes to heat up the paste and make it easier to peel off

(im fairly certain you wont rip the cpu out by using to much force, just dont try to use pliers or a clamp or anything extreme and youll be fine)

I have to go through this every time I pull my HSFs on my Xeons. If you pull it, do not twist. Pull it straight out, so that if you do pull the processor out, the pins won't be bent. But the best thing to do is get some cardboard setup to protect the other components on your mobo, and use a hair dryer to heat up the heatsink...

EDIT: ANd just for your info, I have pulled out both of my processors three different times doing this, and they have never gotten damaged...

Whenever I want to take off my cpu, I just turn on the computer and run prime95 for about 5min to soften the thermal paste. Then take off the heatsink right after you turn off the computer and disconnect the power supply (Important!). At this time, that gray paste should stick as much as peanut butter instead of superglue.

thx for the help i twisted it off and rubbed the rest of the paste off of it with a dry paper towel. I never used the cpu/ motherboard so it was a simple twist. But if i pulled it striaght out it wouldnt budge.

edit slightly bent one pin when i yanked the hsf off and it was stuck to the bottom of it off the mobo. But it is in perfect condition now.
