Need help retrieving Windows XP key

I have a problem. My friend's computer was turned off and now it will not boot. It is just in an endless loop. Maybe there is a way to fix that i am not sure. I told her I would reinstall windows but she cannot locate the key. Is there a program that will retrieve the key? I know keyfinder will do it but windows will not load so I do not know what to do about that. Thanks!!!
 
I have do not have the computer in my hands yet. I am going to pick it up in just a bit. She says safe mode is a no go. If i could get in i could magic jellybean it right away.
 
UBCD4Win has a key finder. You'll have to compile the disc, but you should be able to get the key by booting to the cd and checking the disc from there.
