need help replacing an xbox hard drive

I got a free xbox that someone was throwing out because the hard drive in it died. From all the guides I've read online about changing out xbox hard drives, it sounds like I need a mod chip, 3rd party interface, and some xbox system files. The guides said to get these from the old hard drive using a backup utility, but this is obviously not an option due to the hard drive not working. Does anyone know where I could download these files or have any other advice that would help? The drive I have as a replacement is a samsung 30gb.
