Need help removing Windows Media Player

lozina

Lifer
I dont know whats up with my current OS install but whenever I play a video file it always defaults to the damned Windows Media Player. I want it to default to Media Player Classic.

I have tried the following so far:

1. While opening the file, I click 'Open With...' and find the Media Player Classic EXE file and I place a check in the checkbox which says 'Always use this program'

2. Went into Add/Remove Programs, clicked the Windows Components tab, unchecked the Windows MEdia Player checkbox to uninstall iot

3. Went into Add/Remove Programs, clicked the Set Program Access tab, checked the Custom level then expanded the custom options and under "Choose a default media player" I checked "Use my current media player" instead of "Windows Media Player"

Yet still after rebooting everytime I double-click a video file it defaults to the Windows player...

edit: Looking under the registry under the CLASSES_ROOT tree I see that for "mpegfile" it's shell comand is to Windows MEdia Player. Think I'll try to manually change this now see how this works out

You cannot uninstall Windows Media Player, it is part of the operating system, just set the files that you want to open (that pops open windows media player) to another program as being the default action for that file type.

Yeah but how do I do that? I have tried all the UI methods I know about.

Now I'm going into the frickin registry and setting these things manually... what a pain.

Right click on a file of the type you want to be opened by another app > open with > select app that you want to use (may have to browse to find MPC .exe)> check "always use this program to open this type of file"

Hehe, if you read my post that was listed as #1 as the things I've tried 😉

There's a way to rollback the WMP to version 9.0 and you can uninstall it through the registry. I had a Gateway DMP (mp3 player that was t3h sux0rz) that I had to rollback to WMP 9.0, and along with doing that I also found a site that walked me through removing the whole thing too. Which, for whatever reason I did, and reinstalled it again. I'll see if I can find it again for you.
