i have a compaq presario 700 laptop. it has a athlon4 1600+ cpu in it. i have already taken the laptop apart and i have remove the hsf, now i need to know what the trick is to removing the cpu from the motherboard. thanks in advance for any help.

is there a little lever, or anything? a clip? if not, just pull it straight out. if its broken, dont worry about the cpu, worry about the socket.

Hammer will work. Sorry not constructive help huh.

Sorry from my experience most are hard soldered because they are mobile devices and soldering is less problematic and saves space on the height by not being socketed.

The best way to tell is check out your line of laptop and if the model was offered with many various cpu speeds its possible it might be socketed.
