Need help reinstalling XP

I did a clean install of XP Pro SP1 on an old Athlon machine and I can't get IE to work. The old copy of XP installed IE6. Windows itself appears to work fine, but when I start IE it goes to default homepage, blinks a few times, I have no mouse control, and then I get the error screen that says it has a problem and needs to close. So, I can't update XP or drivers or IE. I've done the reinstall twice and got the same behavior both times. The machine is wired to an ATT Uverse Gateway in a network with one other computer but for some reason it doesn't see the other computer...I don't know what this would have to do with IE not working but I thought I'd mention it. Any suggestions appreciated.

That is really strange!
I would try to copy over the IE8 installer and see if that fixes it.

Good work Chief because that also gives me info if I run into similar problems because I still use Windows XP on a backup computer.

I gave up on IE ages ago. Firefox and Chrome are better, not to mention you can also use Safari among others.

That is very good advice because you have to try other browsers to find one which suits your needs

Especially with regards to XP since it's no longer support and will be stuck with IE8 and as the web moves on it's going to become less and less useful.

I end up reinstalling WinXP a lot for work since that's what we have to use for software compatibility. My usual install order:
1) Install Windows
Then insert flash drive to:
2) Install Drivers
3) Install Antivirus
4) Install IE8
5) Install .Net 3.5 SP1
6) Run Microsoft Update

By doing 4 and 5 before updating, you eliminate a lot of time downloading and installing updates that aren't necessary, i.e. IE6 security updates or .Net 2-3 stuff.
