They use different lasers. The CD laser may have gone bad, or the tiny mirror in there got dusty. Could try blowing some canned air into the drive and see if that helps. Sometimes does, sometimes doesn't.

May just need a new drive.

Another possibility:
Is this is a CDR/CDRW by any chance rather than a printed CD? Have you tried it with a normal production CD?

I only ask because CDR/CDRW's quite commonly are hard to read on different readers/writers than where they were produced or can degrade surprisingly quickly (within a year) to be unreadable.

Absolutely. Optical drives do not last forever. I like the SONY ones.

Tell me, is this system all IDE? Or, does it have SATA connectivity?

Can you give us yr system specs, please?

Much more challenging to clean lasers in a puter optical drive than, say, in a stand alone player.

As i told above its IDE, and config is Intel P2 2.4Ghz, 1 gb DDR2 ram, 945 chipset mobo, Intex 450W PSU, no discrete GPU, 80 gb barracuda IDE.

I ws hoping for it to last few more months before my upgrade.

Hi,

I know the feeling re hoping things will last.

The reason I asked about yr system’s connectivity---I got the optical drive has IDE, but sometimes, an older system has SATA connectivity, but the optical drive is IDE.
I asked with that possibility in mind, thinking, if that were the case, and you had a spare SATA lead and free mobo SATA port, you could get an inexpensive SATA replacement on ebay or like that.
But, if you look on eBay, bet they also have some IDE optical drives in good shape for little money. Assess the reliability of any given vendor by reading the feedback posted.
Just delved, and for example: http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEC-OEM-16x...=US_CD_DVD_Blu_Ray_Drives&hash=item3a865bf4ad

Given this thing costs almost nothing, clearly, you would be taking a chance, but the vendor has 100% feedback. You could email him and ask more specifics re condition, i.e. is it tested? What do you have to loose? Anyhow, there are tons of IDE optical drives there, many brands, all pricepoints!

O! Sorry, I did not realize where you are geographically. My clients, many of whom are in the UK have eBay UK. Not sure if something like that is available to you in India or not.

???? http://www.ebay.in/

But, given you do, in fact, have SATA connectivity, if you have a spare lead from the PSU, an open port and spare SATA data cable, you might find a used, inexpensive SATA optical drive online.....which would serve until you get yr upgrade.

thnx vl look out for it. http://www.ebay.in/ is not quite happening in india... quotes high prices. Used ones are also around 60% price of new so no point of getting it.

O!!! I had NO CLUE! How unfair and terrible!!!! Given how many American Cos have outsourced services/call centers to your country.....it's especially disgusting and unfair.

GREED.......is exactly what Oliver Stone knew it to be.

My only other thought would be social networking sites. Maybe Fakebook?
Not that I trust it a lot, but might you have something like Craigslist there?

My sense is that you need to replace the drive. BTW, does anyone smoke in the vicinity?

Further suggest you consider an external DVD device. That way it can be used on your next machine as well.

I couldn't get u, what is "Craigslist"??

Craigslist, is a very famous site here, started, I think, very long ago by someone named Craig. There are all kinds of forums, people sell things, list things they wanna buy, trade, all that stuff.

It has also been marked by scandal, re a couple of people getting killed by listing or responding i8n in the social hookup part.

I think in recent years, it has lost a lot of credibility, given it seems some fraud is perpetrated there, but, while I haven't visited there in as long as I can remember, am sure there are people selling things like drives.

SCROLL UP, SEE WUT SKORPIO LINKED YOU TO!!!!!! See? It is where you are as well!!!!!!!! You have more options/scources than you realized.
