I meant that you should back up the mp3s. Once you've done the work to rip, you can burn 200-250 mp3s to a cdr. Even if you have the original cds, you won't have to spend the time ripping again. Your time surely is worth more than a pack of blank cds. Also, few cds are scratched "beyond repair" in normal use. I've hand polished many in years past and heard good things about those $30 machines for polishing.
