Need help reconfiguring plug on front mount USB cable.

I have a shuttle AK31A and it has 2 extra USB headers onboard.
I also have a 5 1/4" bay mount [2-USB & Intake Fan] combo unit.

The problem is that the 2 MoBo Headers each have two rows of 5 pins in opposite directions as follows:

Row 1
pin 1) 5v DC
pin 2) Data-
pin 3) Data+
pin 4) Ground
pin 5) Ground

Row 2
pin 1) Ground
pin 2) Ground
pin 3) Data+
pin 4) Data-
pin 5) 5v DC

And the plug on my USB/Fan combo has both sides wired the same direction as follows:

Rows 1 and 2
receptacle 1) 5v DC red
receptacle 2) Data- White
receptacle 3) Data+ Green
receptacle 4) Ground Black
"No receptacle 5 for second Ground"

Also:
The Red 5v receptacles on each side are jumpered together
The Single Black Ground receptacles on each side are jumpered together.

My question is this:
The plug is modifiable, so:
1) Can I simply re-arrange the wires in the receptacles so that they match the pin out on the MoBo?
2) Can I ignore the second ground pin on the MoBo, as the plug only has one black ground wire?
3) Can I ignore the fact that the Reds and Blacks were originaly jumpered together when they were next to each other?

OK, I reversed the terminals on side two so that the plug matches my MoBo except that there is no black wire going to the last (shield) ground pins on either of the two sides of the header.

The 2 Red 5v and the 2 Black Ground terminals are still jumpered together.

Is this going to work OK?

This looks like a situation for trial and error. I don't think anyone can give you a definitive answer even if they have done this before. As with all modifications, results may vary.

LOL! I have Lian Li PC-65 case with the USB in front and I'll be damned if I have a clue as to how to connect them to the mobo. Good luck, dude. Keeps us posted. 🙂

zodder,

My case did not come with the front mounted USB ports.
I bought a unit that fits in a 5 1/4 in bay. It has a double cable that has a duel 5pin receptical, just like the units that fit in a rear card slot.

This receptical sumply plugs onto one of the extra USB headers on the MoBo (usually in the lower right portion of the board (closer to the front of the case).

Check out your MoBo manual and see of your board has any extra USB headers and where they are located.
The pinout should also be listed so that you know exactly how to wire the receptical from your case.

There should be a cable comming from the front of your case with a 2 ea. single (1x5) plugs or 1ea duel (2x5) plug.

If your MoBo has no extra USB headers, you are out of luck and will not be able to use the front USB ports.

Yes, but someone out there has to have some experience with these kinks of USB Headers and USB Plugs, and should have some idea if the mods that I have made is going to work, or if could fry my mobo or not. I am only looking for other peoples experiences to see what has worked for them.

Case in point:
The missing 2nd Black Shield Ground wire for the 5th Pin on each side of the MoBo header: Problem, Not a Problem..........?
The jumper wires between the 2 Red Power wires and the 2 Black Ground wires: Required, Not Required, Good, Bad.........?
