Need help quick

I want to update my DVD-Rom firmware. Kind of hoping it will help on reading CD-R media. Anyway in XP Pro I can't seem to find the firmware version in the DVD-Rom properties. Where do I find them at? But I mainly want to know is how exactly do I update it? It is set to master and my CD-Rom is set to slave. On another IDE channel my burner is set to slave. Whats the best way to get into dos mode in winXP Pro?

Slightly OT.

Before you do anything, make sure that the firmware upgrade specifically solves the problem you are having with your CD drive. If it doesn't then don't do it. There would be no reason. There is always the possibility of a mis-flash and adios CD drive.

If it does solve a problem you are having, go to the mfg. website and download the firmware update utility. Usually, you will copy the utility to a floppy, boot to the floppy and follow the instructions.

Well I don't know if I should or not. On the firmware page it says the latest version improves some different things and I thought it might help on reading some CD-R media that I am having problems with. I have updated mobo firmware plenty of times without any problems. Should I or shouldnt I?

I'm not saying you shouldn't. I flash my firmware and bios when necessary and have never had a problem. I was just pointing out that flashes can, occasionally, go bad.

If the firmware update might solve your problem then, by all means, do it.

With my CD-Rom on the same IDE channel as the DVD-Rom could it interfear and maybe mess the process up? Do it all from floppy right or HD?

Whats this mean?

Turn ON the computer with the drive is connected to the host.

connected to host?

Also it says to decompress the exe file that extracts the bin file. Is it just safe to extract the bin file to floppy then update in BIOS? Or should I decompress it in bios(couldnt get it to work)?

Just tried the update and when it detected all of my optical drives it took me back to dos(drive A🙂. Any ideas was to why it did this?
