this is for a friend's pc. it's an hp computer with a small power supply and no I can't talk him into upgrading it so as I already determined in another thread 8600gt is the best he can go with. I just want to know which of these two to tell him to order. There is a new XFX with a Zalman cooler included and also the EVGA SSC just came out but I think it uses the reference cooler still. Both are clocked real high to 680 core. My main concern now is which is the safer bet. The high clocks worry me a little about the longetivity of the card.

Thanks and please don't tell me about another card because like I said new PSU is a no go.

Out of the two you listed, I'd go with the EVGA. $10 is $10, and they will be so close that 1-2% here won't make any real difference.

Out of the two you listed, I'd go with the XFX. Only $10 more for the Zalman cooler is a steal. Will be quieter and run cooler. Only downside is that it is 2-slot, so make sure that the PCI slot next to it is empty.

MSI 8600GT dual slot cooler

This looks like it has the 8800-series cooler installed, should run cool and quiet. Not clocked up quite as high as those other cards but still a nice factory OC nonetheless (620MHz vs 540 stock).

I think the evga warranty is only two years on the 8600gt so that might the xfx a better deal but then again evga has the step up program so should he change his mind in 90 days. he is waiting one more day to order so got a little time left to figure it out. his power supply is only 300 watts I think the other cards mentioned would be out of the question.

Wow, that's the dumbest thing I've read today. No offence though, just made me laugh.

Ummmm....

I just got done putting a 3870 in a Dell Vostro 200 dual-core system for a friend and it's 100% stable with the stock Dell 300w power supply. I've run through HL2, Far Cry, GRAW and others and it hasn't crashed once or shown any sign of instability. If I would have found any problems at all I'd have bought the 3870 from him (and cancelled my Dell 8800GT order) and recommended he get something a bit lower end. But I haven't been able to spot ANY glitches whatsoever.

As with previous video cards, I think the "recommended" power supply size has a healthy safety margin built in.

FYI - this Vostro 200 has only 1 optical drive, 1 hard drive, 1 case fan and, of course, the 1 CPU fan. So system draw was about as low as you can get before I added the 3870.

They're both GDDR3, so that's a plus for the 8600 (amongst the rather substantial minuses for the 8600 series), I'd get the XFX version as it comes with a better Zalman cooler. Both companies have good warranties and service, and unless you're thinking of stepping up with EVGA, then go with XFX.
