Need help----power supply not matching with motherboard

I am installing a Chaintech socket 939 mobo, and the power supply connection on the motherboard has 24 pins. However, the power supply connection from the case has only 20 pins! I can get them to connect, but then I have 4 unused pins.

Anyone know what the deal is and if I can just connect the two with the 4 pins unused?

Thanks for any help.

Make sure you have the correct four pins unused. Consult your manual.

It'll work fine as long as your PSU was sufficient in the first place.

your PSU is for a PCI-e MOBO and your MOBO is not PCI-e?
You need a non PCI-e PSU me thinks.
or vise-versa..lol i confused myself there..

I suppose that is the problem---I didn't know PCI-E mobos needed power supplies specific to them.

Can anyone confirm what ts3433 said----I can use it as long as I got the right 4 pins unused?

The manual doesn't say.

Thanks.

It should work but it is very important that you get the correct orientation of the connector to the receptacle..

That link is excellent---thanks so much.

Question for you guys. I have a 6600GT card which did NOT come with any external connectors. Will it run with juice from the PCI-E slot or will it, like the 6800, require additional juice (either through a 24 pin connector or external connectors)?

Thanks again.

I don't know if the motherboard needs extra power through the 24-pin connector to support it, but the PCIe 6600GT does not need any power connectors plugged in to it.

I have the Chaintech vnf4 ultra mobo (24 pin) and am running it with an antec 350 w 20pin psu (no adapter). The connector would only go in one way for me. The 4 extra pins are unused in the mobo socket. I am running a 6600gt with no power connector and it works fine.

Maybe a picture is worth a thousand words?

Hi, The extra 4 pins are duplicates of pins in the 20 pin plug. It's done in lieu of using larger wires. Your MB will run with the 20 pin if you just match pin 1 to pin 1. If you plan OCing you may need a 20 to 24 pin adaptor or another PSU with 24 Pins. Jim

Guys, I can't get my computer to work.

I have the power supply connected just like Silversierra's picture. I turn on the computer and the power supply and processor fans start running no problem. But I don't get any "beep" from the computer and nothing shows up on the screen.

I've tried with and without memory (and memory in different slots), checked the cpu to make sure it was installed correctly, and tried it with and without the video card (to see if I could even get a beep). No go.

Any idea what the problem could be?

What kind of videocard do you have? Does it need to have an additional power connection?

EDIT: oh, and try to reset CMOS since it's so easy to try that.
