Ok, this is kind of a strange problem and I can't seem to find a solution. Maybe one of you guys can help me out. I have three computers in a home LAN sharing cable with the use of a Linksys Cable/DSL router (DHCP enabled). All three computers have similar setups, P3's on P3V4X's using Win98. Computer 1 & 2 are having no problems. They access the internet fine and see each other fine over the LAN. My problem is with computer #3. This computer accesses the internet fine, however, it won't see the other computers and it won't download files from the internet. This is a new computer I just built so everything is freshly installed. It is setup exactly like the other two computers.

My computers/LAN are set up as suggested by Steve Gibson. I use TCP/IP for internet (unbound to file/print sharing & Client for MS Networks), NetBEUI (bound) for LAN, and IPX/SPX (unbound) for LAN games. All three computers are showing up in the router's DHCP table.

Can you guys think of anything that would cause this computer not to download files from the internet. It will access web sites with no problem but will not download. Weird. Also if you can think of anything I am missing as to why the other computers won't see it. Thanks for your help.

Can you ping the bad computer from either of the good computers?
Can you ping the either of the good computers from the bad computer?

change cables if possible. Just to rule out a bad cable in use.

Ok, all machines can ping each other. Computer 3 is showing up on the network from the other 2 computers, however, it is inaccessible. When I try to access the network from computer 3 it ends up "not responding." I can still access the internet fine but it won't download any files. Doesn't seem to be a cable/card problem since I can get on the net and ping the other computers. This is really strange. Any help out there???

ughh..don't use NetBEUI at all! It's junk...using TCP/IP for everything could fix your problems with the computer not visible to the others. There's no problem with security since you are behind a firewall.

Set the primary protocol on the machine that can't see the others to IPX/SPX or NetBEUI... not to TCP/IP.

I had the same problem and this is how I resolved it...

Did another fresh install....swapped cards/cables with one of my other systems and all is well. Guess the machine didn't like the card I had in it. doesn't seem to be anything wrong with the card though cuz it works fine in the other system. Weird.

Ok, new problem. Got all of the machines seeing each other but now I'm getting an error message. All of the machines are getting this when trying to access another. It is not unique to just one machine. Can someone tell me what it means and/or suggest a fix. Not finding much help from Microsoft.

Here is the error message:
