I am trying (unsucessfully so far) to set up Remote Access to a computer on a network for a friend. I have entered the router and noted the settings which are different from any that I have seen for DSL before. I am sure that I have set the Remote Access ports correctly. When I go to ipchicken and check the WAN IP address is looks normal and is 72.xx.xx.32.

In the Router, I note the following:
PPoE, RAS and Login is Disabled.
WAN IP Address is static of 10.0.0.250 with a subnet mask of 255.0.0.0 and a Default Gateway IP address of 10.0.0.2

The computers access the internet fast and appear to be DSL. Does DSL have to be set to PPoE in the router? Why the strange (to me) 10.0.0.2 and 250 and subnet mask?:(

The only explanation that I could come up with from a Google Search was that it may be some sort of DHCP assignment pool.

Any information or links on this would be greatly appreciated.

Here is an update after furhter research:

10.0.0.250 and 10.0.0.2 appear to be "private IP addresses" used by the DSL ISP. I assume that the IC is routed to the ISP default gateway and from there on to the Internet by the ISP's router. The ISP is using PPOA instead of PPOE.

Anyone else have any ideas?

Some one set it up for him and probably deviated from the default.

If the DSL Account is PPPOE, and the PPPOE is Not used with the Router it means that the authentication is done by the computer using the WinPOET logon software, which is usually a troublesome setup (see some explanation here, DSL PPPOE and Cable/DSL Routers. ).

Might be that you would have to first walk the friend through a configuration using the phone before you would be able to establish a over the Internet control.

Some DSL modems have built-in router functionality, and can work in either mode, bridged or router; controlled via configuration.
