Need help please for GPU upgrade path.

man u can oc most 7970 to match the 7970ghz edition oc.

i have 7970ghz edition and normal 7970 can oc exactly like mine (Sapphire vaporx 7970ghz)

Ya I guess the Vapor X is not really worth the price premium over the dual X. I was just erring on the side of caution cause I bought a refurbished card before and it broke with a small OC applied. It seems like the 7970 is a real OCing card that will actually add lots of frames unlike some cards where OCing only adds 1 to 5fps.

Well where I went wrong last time is that I did not purchase an IPR plan. NCIX still refunded my money for in store credit as they did not have any HD 6870s left to replace my card with.

Not in my experience. The only card I know of that wastes Ram is the 970.

LOL ... the russian guy is awesome. Always gives out good advice in lots of different threads, usually with solid evidence to back his statements up. He is giving you solid advice now, I'd take it if I was you.

The Russian did not run CFX HD 7850s but I did so I believe my actual exsperience is better than his personal opinion. I will update you guys on how well the HD 7850 CFX setup performs on a proper Intel Z97X setup with PCI E 3.0 x8/x8 and Intel core i5 4690K when I get the other card.

Don't do crossfire/SLi unless you have to. You only do as a last resort when ONE card can't do the job. In this case, You can grab a gtx 780/ti, gtx 970/980 , AMD r9 290/x that will be just as fast as 2x 7850. Plus, you will hit that 2gb limit before your 2x 7850 runs out of grunt. To top it off, there will be many, many, many games that will lack support for multiple GPUs. The complications just isn't worth it unless you have to use 2x GPUs. Just isn't worth it.

I have actually ran dual GPU setups and I can say that it is worth it if you know what you are doing. If you look at the prices of the cards I am looking at you will see that current high end cards are way out of my budget ... I like to eat good food you know I am not the type to eat rammen noodles for a month to fund a gaming PC upgrade LOL.

PC almost all of us here have; reason why we're telling you not to do it now is because we've already seen several games this year bring cards with 2 gigs to their knees. Doesn't matter if your running sli/crossfire; if you're out of ram; you are out of ram.

Russian has run pretty much every set up; backs up his claims with solid data; he and I haven't always agreed on some of is summories; but that is life.

What people are saying; for 200 dollars you can get 290; which will walk over your cf 7850; has double the amount of ram and is a single card solution..that is the best deal...no ifs; no ands; no buts

Sigh ... implying you cant turn down of turn off AA to fix the issue. This setup will be a placeholder for a short time and the $100 bucks savings going with dual HD 7850s which I have ran in the past will give me 7970Ghz and GTX 680 performance or even better. Once again i know cause I have ran the bloody CFX HD 7850 setup before LOL.

What does it matter that you've actually run CFX? Your experience does not change the facts. You're blindly rejecting well known information about dual GPU setups.

It is not nonsense that a single GPU has better frametimes.

It is not nonsense that a single GPU always performs more consistently across different titles and different in-game situations.

It is not nonsense that 2GB VRAM is a serious limitation for the graphics horsepower of two 7850's.

If I were you, I would get the best price/perf single GPU card I could afford after selling my 7850. It doesn't even have to have the raw performance of two 7850's, it'd still be better than a crossfire setup.

The self-righteous arrogance here is astounding. You come here asking for advice, thereby implying that you could use some help from people who know better. And when you receive advice you don't like, you call it bad advice and nonsense. Why come asking for help in the first place, huh? Waste of your time, waste of everybody else's time. :thumbsdown:

This is not a fix, this is a defeat. 7850 Crossfire has enough power to enable AA and run it smoothly, yet can't do that because of VRAM. Conclusion: a single GPU with 3-4GB VRAM would be better.

Ya cause actually running the CFX setup to great secusses in real life is no good ... lets go with someones opinion that has never ran CFX. Your blindly rejecting someone whom has actually ran the setup in question and is not gogin on with repeating people that don't know what they are on about. Surprise I don't run AA anyways cause is makes little difference and has a huge negative performance impact. Plase stop implying I don't know what I am on about.

Conclusion ... Running a cheaper card in CFX as a place holder for the short term is better than upgrading to a more expensive card that is also going to be replaced in short order.

Ask yourself a question will 2x HD 7850 give better performance than one 7850 for the least amount of money ?

You've spent total 20-30 more than buy a new 7850 to crossfire and have much more powerful card that will last you long and allow you to save longer for next series of cards.

That's what I'm gettting at. That's the better over all value. Take it for what you will. Most still come with Civ: beyond space which you can still say for 20-30......so in the end you'd actually spend the same.

I just need a cheap place holder until the new cards arrive. I don't sell old cards because I collect them and for me it's not worth the time and hassle. I think adding another 7850 to my rig is a good and cheap upgrade for the short term.

You argue not me .... I call Police ! If I feel set on the cheapest upgrade path then that's what I will do. I will however be very sure to report back here with the hard facts when the second card comes in.

If that's the case then yep 7850 would be the cheapest route. Not the best route but the cheapest....

I tend to sell my old hardware to help fund new stuff 😀 helps offset costs
