My brother is buying a new laptop. Has $2,000 to spend (can be flexible).

Where are the best places to look? I check Dell, Gateway, and Alienware. Are there any other good laptop places?

Are there any models someone would recommend? It's a work machine, but he wants the best video he can get so that he can run some occasional new games.

Thanks for any help.

If he's even THINKING about doing games, don't get a PowerBook. How many new games come out for Mac?

I have a T40, and I love it. For games, the ATI video is under-powered. If he wants a gaming machine, try something with a Radeon 9600 (in a PC notebook).

I would go with the Dell Inspiron 5150. No surprise here if you've read my other posts about this laptop.

Another vote for the IBM T40 here. Your brother should get one with a Radeon Mobility 9000 if he wants to do occasional gaming.

Yet another vote for the T40...or possibly the X31 if he needs something small.

Thanks for the tips. The Dell D800 and 5150 look pretty nice. He'll probably get something along those lines. Thanks for the video card suggestions. I have no idea what laptop machines are using nowdays.

Have a look at the Inspiron 8500 too...
IMHO, 5150 and 5100 are way too thick :p

I just got a Eurocom D500p Monte Carlo. So far I'm im love with it. Radeon M10 video (9600 pro mobility) P4 2.6C 800mhz fsb. It's more of a desktop replacement, but I knew I would regret getting anything with any less of a video card in the long run. So if you are considering games, I recommend it. The reason I went with Eurocom, is that I live in Canada and they are based in Canada. But if you are from the US I would go with a Sager notebook, they are based on the same chipset and seem to have a few more desirable options.

Hope this helps.

If you're going to play games, i'd go with the compaq x1000, and save a few bucks. If not, i'd go with IBM, they are very durable.

Yes, I am quite aware of that, but the reason I did not order from Sager, is that I live in Canada and the Duty/Taxes/Shipping would have killed me. So that is why I went with the Canadian based Eurocom in Ottawa.
