I need to get a wireless router and 2 wireless adapters for a friend. It's in a townhome/condo, and the router is downstairs with the PC's upstairs. Would I need one with Rangeboost? I'm in a bit of a hurry since they already had HSI turned on, so they're paying for it and can't use it yet.

For a router, I was looking at the Linksys WRT54G for $45 at Amazon. I don't know anything about Netgear.?

For adapters, I was looking at the Linksys WMP54G or Netgear WG311T (better reviews).

Linksys WMP54G for $21 at Pcpartszone/Pricegrabber.
On Amazon. Wrong picture?

Netgear WG311T $31.37 at Circuit City.
On Amazon
Good thing about the Netgear is I could get it right away from Circuit City, but that's meaningless if I have to order a router anyway.

Or maybe the Linksys WUSB54GR. $32 at Amazon. This is USB, but might be good since the PC is on the floor, and this adapter could be put up higher than the PC. The PC might be USB 1 though.

Or maybe a package with a router and adapter, like those at Newegg, then 1 more adapter. But we pay tax through Newegg.

Thanks. Why would that be so?
Also which router would that work well with?

I've never heard of Edimax.

For the price, I've had good success with the latest - v8.2 - of the Linksys routers for those who insist on using it.

For a little more I'd go with the following Zyxel router:

Zyxel X-550e at Newegg

The edimax card Jackmds points out is good since the antanna can be moved to help with reception.

Good luck.

Yeah you did not, what that means?

It means that they spend less on Advertising and marketing.

The decision of how much to spend on markettng is No indication to the value of the hardware.

No. My question was in regard to your statement:
This is better and much more flexible than your choices.
Sorry. Assumed that'd be obvious.

Its Antenna with the extended coax let you position the reception point above the system and thus the signal is not obstructed.

The chipset is very stable and flexible having WPA2 and drivers for 64 bit OS; as well.

Its price is very competitive (No need for the manufacturer to factor in High marketing cost to create the Armies of the fanboys ;) ).

Jack - Excellent information sir!

One question - of the router options you recommend above... what do you run? Or maybe in what order would you recommend those?

I am torn between the Asus and a Dlink Xtreme DIR-655 that I can get for 90$... co-worker bought and does not need it.

On a side note, I wish I could find a site that tested multiple routers and delivered the results..

I run Buffalo G54 High Power, unfortunately Buffalo Wireless it is Not allowed to be sold in the USA any more (corporate legal issues). Some units are available on eBay for a premium price.

If you do not need the DD-WRT features the Zyxel would be the next choice.

Otherwise, the Asus or the Linksys WRT54GL are about the same level.
