well im wondering what you guys think about this controller card and the 1st or 2nd hd here

ive been reading up a little bit and it seems like the LSI controller cards are really good cards, i read about the HD at storage review here. and it seems like its a pretty good drive. But i still want to know what you guys think about this stuff expecially if any of you have used either of these parts in your own systems...

LSI is great...

as for the HD's seagates are very very loud.

I would recommend a maxtor 10kIII drive as they are realitively inexpensive.

If you are out for performance may I suggest you go to the HOT DEALS FORUM

HYPERMICRO has a deal where you can choose a variety of IBM SCSI drives and get an LSI controller for free

The new Seagate 15.3 drives are not any louder than the IBM.

Don't get a drive with an 80-pin SCA connector. You'll have to get an adapter to go with it and they often cause problems. If you must go with an 80-pin drive, I would get one from Hypermicro as they include a converter that works properly, getting one from another vendor is a crap shoot.

Make sure your controller comes with a terminated LVD cable. If not, you need to buy one separately.

The 15000rpm Seagates use fluid-dynamic bearings. I have the X15-36LP and it's pretty civilized, although the seeks are more pronounced than IDE drives (go figure).

I second the motion to go with Hypermicro. For one thing, they pack stuff as if they care about it.

well, im on a tight budget and compubuzz has a good deal on the IBM drive i was looking at and the controller card is also the cheapest on Pricewatch...

basically im just wondering if the ibm drive i am looking at is good for the money? and im pretty sure i will stay away from the 80 pin converter.

Go here, click on 'Database' and you'll find a number of benchmarks - just choose the benchmark you want and it will show you the test results.

Without hesitation I would go with the 15k.3 over the 36LP, better performance and runs cooler and quieter... I am thinking of replacing my Atlas 10K3 with the Seagate 15K.3...
