Looking to replace my 4-5 year old Brother laser all in one. Been looking at going to an inkjet all in one for those times when its nice to have a little color in my prints. Will do photos sporadically, but sharp text is more impt than photos. I usually print my photos at MPIX; however, a random photo here and there would be nice.

Preferences;
  • Wifi
  • Airprint
  • Scan/Copy/Print/Fax (eFAX would be nice)
  • Duplex
  • ADF
  • Under $150, the cheaper the better

Currently looking at the following; (but open to any suggestions)

EPSON Workforce 645 - $99, fast and cheap, not sure on ink/photo quality
HP Officejet Pro 8600 - $149, built in eFax, high capacity ink w/ 2300 pages, not sure on photo quality
HP Photosmart 7510 - $141, Likely best photo quality of all three, built in eFAX, lower capacity ink than 8600

Thx in advance for any help!

Canon MP560, never failed me (though I'm not sure what airprint or adf are...). It's 2y old, so I think the price suits your target.

I was hoping to by an Epson NX 430, but I've had just about the most miserable experience possible with Office Depot.

Brother MFC-7860DW. It's the best I've owned. Wifi or Ethernet, fast printing, good scanning, has fax. ADF or flat bed. Duplex. Works great from Mac or PC, also supported by the Brother iPrint app.

Best part is, consumables are the usual Brother prices - inexpensive.

I got it for $149 on sale at Staples, but it was a pretty hot deal - that was a year ago, though.

To appex,

Question 1, what is wrong with your existing brother laser?

Question 2, what kind of a network do you have and how many users do you share it with?

Point #3, if you want color photo printing, a color inkjet printer is your only option. But in terms color photo printing quality, you now have to take a vow of poverty to keep such inkjet printers fed with rip off rate ink jet cartridges. I am one of the few remaining lucky smucks to own a non chipped Canon inkjet I can refill dirt cheap. And the other point to make, is that a true photoprinter needs more than cyan, yellow, and magenta to deliver descent photo quality.

Point #4, there is no law that says a individual user or a networked family can't have both a B/w laser and a color inkjet printer at the same time. And then be able to use the right tool for the right job.

The Lemon law solution I advocate.

Point #5, ink jets, be they all in ones or not, seldom last long, lasers tend to last far longer.

Point #6, inkjets tend to clog if not used regularly, lasers thrive regardless however infrequently they are used.

Point #7, every time a inkjet printer boots up, it uses a ink wasting cleaning cycle. Leave such a inkjet in the off state, and it won't clog if you only use it only once a month. Otherwise most inkjets will waste most of their expensive ink cartridges doing un needed cleaning cycles.

I can't recommend the HP OfficeJet series of printers highly enough. I'm about to purchase one myself (my old Photosmart 3310 just died) and I know several people that have them that swear by them because of their good efficiency (low cost per page) and print quality.
