ok im building a new system and i want one 80 gig hardrive and one 250 gig hardrive for storage

i was thinking of geting western digital se ones but i heard they suck can anyone recomend two good hardrive or should i just get one big hardrive maybe a 250 gig one ?

thanks for all your help !

Western Digitals suck? To each their own. I've only owned WD internal HD's (six years now since getting into computers) and they work great for me. For external drives, I went with Seagate which are very quet.

I'm a Maxtor fan, so take this with that knowledge.

I OC heavy on the PCI bus, and NO drive that I have used can take the abuse as well as the high-end Maxtors. For under 200 dollars, you can get the DiamondMax with 16mb buffer that is faster than anything other than a Raptor, and against the Raptor, it no real comparison, because you would need 5 or 6 Raptors to equal the capacity of some of the Maxtors in that series. Price would kill in a setup such as that, as would the noise.

i decied im going to get a 80 gig seagate with NCQ for my operating system and a 250 seagate with ncq for my storage so that i can format without losing my stuff sounds good ?

i had have bad luck with maxtor in the past and i will not suport them

i dunno it makes me kinda mad when people come here asking a question expecting us to do all the work for them, especially when anandtech, this site just a few days back released an article on it

http://anandtech.com/storage/showdoc.aspx?i=2396

read it, come back with some narrowed down questions then ask *sigh* i hate to be mean but thats just way too lazy

Anyway I don't think WD suck at all. They were once the performance leader in HDDs
It seems that they slacked a bit now though.

To be honest I am not satisfied with the performance of Segate Barracuda 7200.8 either.

Maxtor's MaxLine has the best performance right now. Yet I don't like the realiability oif their drives.

I would go with the Seagate NCQ drives. I have never used Maxtor, but know plenty of people who have. I have heard good things about all hard drives, but bad things of all of them too. The NCQ hard drives should work great with any HT Technology. Plus, the Seagates have a 5 year warranty on them. I know some people would say that they need it, but hey, it doesn't hurt.

A 16 MB buffer would be awesome with the Maxtor though.

the question you are asking is just people's opinions. get whatever is on sale and save some $$$. just remember that eventually all hdds will fail, they are a mechanical item and will break. and do some research on your own, make educated decisions and then ask here if they are good.

I've had my Maxtor for 4.5 yrs. I never knew it was a maxtor until I got into computer a couple years back. It is a 60GB 5400RPM drive, and man is this thing loud. I thought it was my fans, but I narrowed it down the the HDD. I'm in the process of building a new comp and just purchased a 160GB SATA Seagate w/ NCQ @ www.ewiz.com It was only $89 shipped, much cheaper about $20 cheaper than NewEgg.

I can't tell you first hand about the performance, but I've read many review and they are fast and quiet drives. I especially like the 5 yr warranty, which is something no other drive offers. Closest one I can think of is WD's 3 yr. eWiz also has the Seagate 250GB for $129 + free shipping.
