I have a spare PC my son uses (10) to game on, skt 939 3800+ with 2 gigs ram and windows. Currently it has a 7600gs in there, and I need to replace it. Whats not gonna be overkill with the processor in mind, playing games like HL2/TF2.

19" standard monitor btw. He's 10, so eye candy isn't a necessity, just good frame rates.

The $80 deals seem to have dried up recently, most of those cards are OOS.

8800GS or 9600GSO (same card) for $100
8800GT 256MB for $100 (ZZF - only if you game at 1280x1024 or lower, otherwise 8800GS)
9600GT for $120
8800GT for $140
4850 for $170

You will probably become somewhat CPU bound around the 9600GT/8800GT level

i just picked up a 3850 for ~$100AR and love it and it came w/ company of heroes, an excellent game, a bit too old for him probably though. i wen't w/ the asus version for the game and rebate, but the card is solid and o/cs to nearly 3870 speeds out of the box.

Probably an HD3850 or 9600GT. Damn, you let your 10 year old song play TF2? I wish I had a dad like you :p

x2 3800+, overclocked or not ? Mine at 2.6ghz chugs alone just fine with a 8800gts 320mb. I think only when you buy a Hd4850 or something like that, that you will become CPU bound in some games.
