Need help picking ISP for my girlfriend

I live in the UK, choosing broadband over here is no problem. But my girlfriend is moving to her own apartment in Tucson Arizona, and needs to get a fairly decent connection. She needs some kind of cheap broadband option but has no clue about that type of thing.

Obviously me not living in the US i don't really know much about costs, where to look for decent ISP's etc..

whats better over there? Cable? DSL?
What kind of prices should i be looking at?

If anyone could link me or give me help id really appreciate it.
Thanks in advance

*she wouldn't be doing any heavy downloading but would like to stream video with me through netmeeting for an idea of her bandwidth needs*

Broadband prices are in the neighborhood of $50 a month depending on the service. I have Earthlink DSL and it has proved to be a reliable connection over the 2 1/2 years I have had it. The one thing about DSL is you need to be within 17,000 feet of a phone company's central office. Some can push the signal to 20,000, but that is rare here in the states. Cable is a good option too and may be the only option, depending on you GF's new residence.

If you plan on streaming video, high upload bandwidth might be something to looking at. I have Verizon DSL( i don't think Verizon exists in Arizona) and it costs 35 dollars a month and i get speeds of 200K/sec download but only 20k/sec upload. I would probably have gotten cable but adelphia is really bad in my area.

Earthlink seems pretty good although i have never used them. They offer DSL and Cable. Same price, except if they have Comcast in Arizona, then cable is more expensive. The cable they offer is Faster uploading. DSLreports is a good place to find out actual speeds of the services.

Ouch talk about a long distance relation ship!

Check out dslreports.com for specific info on the Tucson area.

If she knows her address, she can probably check to see if she qualifies for DSL. (telco's website often can check automatically) If she can't get DSL, then cable is her only option.

Cable and DSL are widely varaible in terms of reliability and availablity. I live 5 minutes from AOL Headquarters in a very populated section of northern Virginia (DC area), yet neither service is available and I'm stuck with 56K, so don't expect either to be available just because a location is near/in a major city. Also, my relatives down in Florida claim that their cable service is much faster and more reliable than DSL, while my local cable company (Adelphia) has a notoriously slow and unreliable service and poor availability. The only way to check ahead of time would be to go to a review site... DSLReports is a good one to start with. If you find good reviews for a service then you can go to the ISP's site and check availability.
