Need help picking a strategy game

I've built this nice PC and I'm tired of playing FPS. Between these games what would you all recommend. I have not played a strategy game on PC since Warcraft III, but something similar to that would be a plus. Also, since I am so noob, single player is more important, but a nice multiplayer is also important.
  • Civ 4
    Company of Heroes
    World In Conflict
Thanks.

Actually I would make you broaden that list to include a pretty affordable Dawn of War Platinum Edition which can be had for 30 in stores..and if you like single player then C&C3 is a GREAT one! The titles you listed are also top notch. Civ 4 is supposed to be one of the best

EDIT: Try the multiplayer demo for World in Conflict before you buy! 7 days free!

I think Civ 4 wouldn't work well for your playing style. Its a hard one to get into. CoH and WiC are better choices.

How accessible is Dawn of War / the Warhammer series? I enjoy RTS games, but love strategy games I can pause and issue orders. Since most don't support that, I get frustrated with some of the more difficult titles.

I hate to be a graphic whore, but how is Dawn of War for widescreen support (particularly 1680x1050). A google search makes it look spotty. Civ 4 also looks to not fare as well with supported resolutions.

I'm leaning toward CoH right now, and I'll definitely look into C&C 3.

Command and Conquer 3 is the best of the bunch, especially when it comes to single player.

World In Conflict has a unique multiplayer mode where you specialize in a field of battle, like air, support, or armor.

my vote is for company of heroes so long as you dont leave your AT guns alone to get out microed by the computer and have your guys standing there doing nothing. hot!

maybe im just a bad RTS player....oh wait, i know i am 🙂.

Singleplayer is important, multiplayer is important? Well which is it lol...

I suppose either way you cant go wrong with company of heros and its expansion, i would skip cnc3, not many play online anymore compared to when it was released and theres not much strategy involved in it compared with other games.

Sins of a solar empire (4x/RTS cross easer to get into then civ4 or galactic civ 2)
Supreme Commander
Company of heroes (my vote for pure RTS)
World in conflict (best played online, no skirmish and little single player replayability)
Medieval 2: Total war
Dawn of War (only played dark crusade)
Command and conquer (try and get the set with ALL the games in one bundle)
Black & White 2
Homeworld 2
Star trek armada
Galactic civilization 2 (a 4x, but you listed civ4 so i thought i'd mention it)

Give youtube a visit and look at the gameplay of each game to decide what you like best.

Now excuse me while i reinstall CoH.

Civ4 is a bit difficult to get into, as someone pointed out, but it's also a good candidate for the best game of any kind ever. Nothing else has that kind of depth.

CoH is also a lot of fun, but I only played that for about a month - I'll be playing civ4 until civ5 comes out.

Dawn of War looks fantastic on my rig @ 1920x1080 everything maxxed/high.

I have DoW plus all 3 expansions. It is a riot on single player, the multiplayer community is very strong too.

Civilization IV is pretty great and it's replay value and addictiveness is unmatched, this is one of the few games that can really drive me to pull an all-nighter on a constant basis, once you start playing you can't stop! and games can last 3-6 hours easily.

Aside from that, I really liked Command & Conquer 3 for it's old-school factor, it feels really similar to the first game and it's just downright awesome in my opinion. Company of Heroes and World in Conflict are two awesome games in their own right but I'm not a big fan of RTS that don't have a nice base building, harvest-resource economy model, this is particularly a problem in World in Conflict (where it's more of a tactics game than strategy) but less so in Company of Heroes but both are pretty great games anyway. The Warhammer games are also recommendable if you like the CoH resource-model. Age of Empires III is also worth looking at, personally I love the entire series (AoE, Warcraft/Starcraft and Command & Conquer are my favorite RTS series ever) but there is a demo to try.

Finally, you can't go wrong with Sins of A Solar Empire, this reminds me of a real-time Master of Orion which was nothing short of an spectacular game. Well those are the extent of my recommendations unless of course you'd like to go old-school and download Command & Conquer Gold free from EA, just kidding, C&C Gold sucks a LOT for people who didn't play it back when it was first released, otherwise the nostalgia factor is priceless.

Medieval 2: Total war and Kingdoms Exp. Great single player action that will last you for months.

CoH, nice everything. Multiplayer though is a tad tedious. If your opponent has one skilled or experienced player, the game is over before it starts. Good luck finding a balanced 4vs 4 , but then again multiplayer has always been the same for most games online.

My first foray into RTS was LOTR: Battle for Middle Earth II, and I gotta say, if you are at all a fan of the movies or books, you might just love this game.
