I am about to purchase my first notebook and I'm looking at the three offering from Lenovo, X61, T61, and R61. My budget is around $1300 CA max and I'd like it to be portable and robust enough to last me for at least 4 years. There will be no gaming involved and it'll be used primary for taking notes during class and programming.

Choice 1
I really love the ultra-portable X61 since it only weights 1.5kg, but I'm not sure whether it will last long due to the common heat issues for ultra-portables. Am I going too far in terms of size (12.1")?
X61
- C2D T7300
- 1024MB RAM
- 80GB HD
- X3100 Graphics
- 12.1"
- 4965AGN wireless, 11n disabled
- 8 Cell
- 3 year warranty
- $1300 CA

Choice 2
How does 15.4" compare to 12.1" in terms of size? It is so much cheaper than X61.
T61
- C2D T7300
- 1024MB RAM
- 120GB HD
- X3100 Graphics
- 15.4"
- 4965AGN wireless, 11n disabled
- 6 Cell
- 3 year warranty
- $1150 CA

Choice 3
There are two flavors of R61, 15.4" and 14.1".

R61i
- C2D T5250
- 1024MB RAM
- 80GB HD
- X3100 Graphics
- 15.4"
- 3945ABG wireless
- 6 Cell
- 1 year warranty
- $950 CA

Choice 4
R61i
- C2D T5250
- 1024MB RAM
- 120GB HD
- X3100 Graphics
- 14.1""
- 3945ABG wireless
- 4 Cell
- 1 year warranty
- $1000 CA

Please help me pick one out of the four choices above. Thanks.

If you want to bring a laptop around campus to take notes with, 15.4" laptops are out of the question IMO. The easiest way to see what is best for you is to go to a computer store and check out the different sizes of laptops. It is very difficult to tell what size laptop you need without actually seeing and feeling them yourself

Personally, I would either get the T61 14.1" or X61 12.1". The T61 has a better build quality than the R61

Make sure to use lenovo coupons and fat wallet. If you have an AMEX card also use the Tailormade program to save 10% off the after tax price.
