Updating things and if it could go south it has already left the station.

2nd MB (1st would not fit case) replacement only has PCI-e 2.0 x8 (and x4) slots

My existing card () does not fit (did I say this build has started to go south?)

Now I am banging heads over other cards that will not fit.

Need a good/decent card that will slide in a PCI-e 2.0 x8 slot if such a beast exists. Don't need a screaming demon just something better than the onboard Matrox G200eW 16 MB DDR2.

Suggestions are GREATLY appreciated and solicited

Can you tell us what motherboard that is? A picture alone makes it much harder.

Supermicro X8DT6-F

What case do you have?

Drill that x8 slot end open and any normal x16 card will work just fine.

That is something I did not know..... I will take a look at some of the cards I have here and see which slot I can "butcher" :hmm:

Thanks!!!

I have never heard of a PCIe x8 GPU, and I certainly wouldnt go butchering any of the existing slots which are in actual fact for expansion cards, NOT GPUs!

If you want a dual CPU system with GPU, you will have to get a workstation board, not a server board.

Best I got: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applicat...dmPWar5uUR5GtGSW6sSTm4NEsE-d1s2MgUhoCgDDw_wcB

If you want better, you'll need a new board or an adapter.

Tell me about this "adapter" you speak of (URL?) :)

After posting I did some serious searching and came up with the NVIDIA 720 as the best 2.0 x8 card too. If there is another option I'd like like to hear about one.

Some serious digging found a PNY "flavor" for >$40 shipped

I "need" to run hyper V so the 12 cores will come in handy.

This won't be a "gaming box".

I "could" live with the G200 on board but I do some photo and video work so it might bog down too much, even with the horse power under the hood

the original board I wanted to use (and purchased) was a workstation board

http://www.supermicro.com/products/motherboard/QPI/5500/X8DAH_-F.cfm

I wasn't paying attention and once installed it was 1" TOO WIDE

I toyed with the idea of a narrow power supply then dropped back and punted.....

Pick one of the PCIe slots and dremel the end out, Drop in any GFX card you wish.

Suggest you don't use slot closest to the CPU or the card could hit the ram slots.

Plenty of search results dremel cut PCIe.

There isn't much. Just a few GT520/GT610's with a PCIe x1 interface. Which would be even more interface limited, of course.

PCIe x1-to-PCIe x16 adaptors do exist, but they're not "budget-friendly".

This won't be a "gaming box".

Then you don't need anything faster then a GT720, unless you're looking to drive a 4K monitor.

Well it is all hypothetical now anyway.

xfered CPU #1 from the extended enhanced MB (the one that was too wide to fit the case) into the enhanced-atx MB. CPU #2 socket looks like someone took a ball peen hammer to it. total trash.

So it is off on the search for another MB.

This time I will not be in such a hurry and get what I am after.

A smaller power supply is starting to look better and better as the first MB had all the bells and whistles that I wanted, it was just too wide for the case.

Arrrrgggggg......

On the bright side. I have one squeaky clean case now

I have to confess that when I saw this picture I thought "PCI card" :)

Got a few of those laying around too :)

Not sure I will even be able to use that 2.0 x8 card once it arrives. I think my old 2.0 x16 card is a bit beyond that one.

As you already have the workstation board, wouldnt it better cheaper and easier to just get another case?
Im quite sure that even if you did get a card to fit the server board, the BIOS isnt setup to disable the onboard chip so you would need to use that anyway. Im not familiar with Supermicro board, but certain you couldnt do it with HP
