Hey all. I just recently bought a Duron 700, Microstar Pro2a and my goal is to overclock it as close to 1ghz as possible. I'm extremely successful at 850mhz (8.5 x 100) with my ram at turbo, cas 2, pc133. When I first hooked up the system I tried 9 x 100 (didn't change the ram so it was cas 3, normal, pc100) and it was working. I could work in Windows. Now for some reason every time I try 9 x 100 it reads my cpu as 500mhz, 9.5 x 10 my cpu is 550mhz, and 10 x 100 my cpu reads 600mhz. Any ideas? I've tried messing with the voltages with no luck.

Thanks.

If you haven't done this, do it..

Take your Duron out and connect all of the L1 bridges and all of the L7 bridges wth a pencil. If you have a pretty good fan, try 100*9.5 with 1.8v showing in the BIOS (seems as though MSI boards give about .07v more than selected).. See what that does. If that doesn't show 950MHz, erase any marks you made on the Duron completely and try it again.. At first, my Pro2 was reading my 800MHz as 550MHz because (I think) I made some unintended marks with the pencil near the L1 bridges.

Don't worry about your RAM timings right now.. Just try to see what's causing your CPU to act up when you try to overclock it.

Thanks for the advice, I'm going to try that in a few minutes. Whats weird though is on Thursday night right after I put the machine together I was able to clock it to 9 x 100 and it displayed 900mhz properly. The machine was stable too, but now it won't go back.

Is there any risk in hurting my processor by removing the heatsink? I have a Coolermaster DP5-6h51. Which is suppose to be adequete (sp?) for a Tbird 1.2ghz.

UPDATE:

Well I messed around with the BIOS and I got it to go 9.5 x 100 with ram settings off. I kept messing around with it and now I'm at 9.5 * 106 giving me 1007mhz. I also upped the ram settings to cas 2 clk+33 turbo so my ram should be at pc140. My system is running at 45C right now with seti@home running in background.

I was unable to hit 9 x 100 btw, it showed up as 500mhz, but oh well. I think my problems were coming from the on-board audio on the MSI Pro2a board. I had it turned on before. Now it is off and I am able to hit 1ghz+ w/ duron.

Thanks for the info, luckily I didn't need to mess around with the pencil trick again.
