Need help on replacing HDD without reformatting

I have a 400GB HDD and a 750GB external hard drive. My 400gb has been making a lot of high clanking sounds when running certain programs and I feel that it may perhaps be a sign of things to come. I am considering upgrading to a 750GB internal but I would like to somehow copy what is currently in the 400gb and xfer that to the new hard drive without having to reinstall windows and all the apps I had.

Is this possible and if so, how can I do this process?

Most hard drive makers offer free utilities for moving an existing OS install to a new, larger, disk. There are also tons of backup programs that will do this, as well as cloning software like Clonezilla and others.

AS R/M says, clone the drive to a new one. Best results are when you use bootable rescue media provided by the cloning utility.
