Hello guys!

I recently graduated from college, and am seeking a place to start my real career. :D I have written a resume, but I want to make it more effective. While I am doing that, now I have to decide whether I should put my work experience at my own family run restaurant, or not.

Here's few description about it: The business has been around about a year, and I helped it from the beginning. My official title was manager since I do a job of what restaurant managers usually do. Also, all of vendors and business partners (ie. landlord) know me as a manager. Because it's my own family business, I wasn't paid much though.

So, what do you think guys? Should I put this roll in my resume, or should I now since it was more likely voluntary/non-paid job? I'd appreciate any comment. Thanks in advance!

Not enough info. What other experience do you have listed on your resume, and what kind of work are you trying to get?

Let me see..

Besides the one I mentioned above, I put following:

1. Freelance translator (2003 - Current)
2. Small CPA company (2005 Summer) - Internship
3. University (2003 - 2005) - On campus student employment

I am accounting major, and minor in Japanese as well as bilingual in Korean. I am looking for a job in accounting area (staff accountant/auditor. Usually do not require language skill other than English), or sales and marketing for Korean company (Definately requires language skill). So, either case, my work experience at the restaurant directly related to the position I am looking for.

And what are the dates of the restaurant employment? If it's prior to 2003, I would definitely leave it off. The internship gives you the edge you need to look like you know what you're doing. The restaurant job would be useful only if it was the only thing you could really put on your resume in the absence of other experience.

The restaurant one is actually very recent. Beginning January last year, then ending this January. But I'd agree that I might have an enough background for my initial (officially :)) career as a college graduate. Thanks for your comment!

Don't mention it is family owned, just state the name and occupation and only go in detail if it's asked by the employer during the interview.

It does not matter what you were paid, or who owned the place. You were the manager so put it in your resume.
