Need HELP on installing win2k on Raid 0 array

Yakomo

Senior member
I spent 6 hours yesterday trying to install win2k on my raid 0 array. It's a Fasttrak 66 with 2x20 gig maxtor drives on it.
Previously it had win me on it and I had no problems with it.
Here's what I did

1.) Formatted the drive
2.) Setup Win2k and it did the first step with copying the
initial setup files to c: drive. That went smoothly.
3.) Reboot
4.) Continuing Win2k setup
5.) I pressed F6 installed win2k fasttrak66 driver
6.) Get a Inaccessable_boot_device
7.) I'm really frustrated

I used the latest drivers from promise. I tried another method installed Win98se first, then upgraded to win2k, same result always after the first reboot it goes to a Inaccessable_boot_device error.
Since the driver disk had 4 different win2k promise drivers
I did installs with each one of them and without any drivers and
all with the same outcome.

I ended up putting in a seperate 20 gig that wasn't in the raid
array. Installed win2k on it fine. Ok that's great and all but now
after installing win2k, it still isn't finding my array. Ok now
I'm thinking all I have to do is load the drivers. WRONG I tried
3 sets of drivers, the original one that came with the controller
I think v1.23, then I used I the 1.33 Fasttrak66 one, no go. Then
I used the 1.33 Fasttrak one (without the 66) no go. Ok so now I'm
extremely frustrated. I pull everything out of my mobo except for
my GF2 and I systematically boot up with the raid controller in
each PCI slot except slot 1. And see if win2k can find it. And
guess what? it didn't. :|

If any gurus out there can help I'll be in your debt forever.
Oh yeah the Mobo is a p3v4x and yes the raid array was set as
bootable within the fasttrak bios.

Yakomo,

My RAID experience is a bit different, as I use onboard RAID with my KT7. When I set it up, I first had to establish the array in BIOS, then partion and format it. Once done, you install W2K, but before you do, Windoze will prompt you for the 3rd party RAID drivers. You need the real mode or DOS drivers at this point. Install them and then continue with the W2K install. See if everything boots normally. HTH!

Thanks for the advice. Already done that. There's no way to
format a raid array if it's not setup and defined. That's the first thing I did and also made it bootable within the fasttrak Bios. It was running WinME fine, just wanted to install win2k and I get a bucket
full of problems.

For win2k it won't prompt you for the Mass storage drivers until after
it's first reboot. And even after I install those drivers it comes up
with the Inaccessable_Boot_device. Win9x, WinME have no problems
installing on this array. Just win2k grrr.

Yakomo,

Well technically, you can format a drive as long as it's accessable to the system. You won't have a RAID array though which was why I was asking.

Hmmm...it's been a while since I set my system up so I don't remember if it rebooted after loading system information or not. I just remember that I had to hit F6 damn fast to get it to interrupt the "Setup is inspecting your hardware..." message. I then hit "s" and loaded the drivers. After that my W2K install was cake.

I wish I could help you out more, but I think someone with a setup closer to yours would be more help...good luck!

Thanks again for the reply, yep you have to hit that F6 in like 2 seconds. I installed and tried all 3 of the different win2k drivers for fasttrak controllers and all of them come up with the ..sigh Inaccessible_boot_device. Right now I'm just getting to the point where I'm going to throw out the raid controller and just do a software raid setup.

WAHOO looks like I figured it out.. all I had to do was flash the BIOs on my
fasttrak controller.. was 1.07 flashed it to 1.30 and BAM it actually finished completing the install!

Yakomo,

Sweet! Congrabulations. Now bench it with Sandra or something and see if it was worth all the work. I get some pretty wicked throughput with my two Maxtor 7200's.
