Hello guys, im looking to upgrade my graphics card (ASUS HD6670). My motherboard is a GA-H61M-DS2 and a power suply of 550W Max power.

I was thinking on getting a MSI R9 290 Gaming 4GB DDR5, but for that i would need to upgrade my psu, or a MSI GTX 970 4GD5. This last one has a PCI Express x16 3.0 interface and i dont know if its compatible with my motherboard.

At last, if you think that it's not worth on buying any of those GPU, im thinking on expending 300/400 euros max.

Thank you and sorry for my bad english.

Either card would work fine. If you have a good quality PSU then both cards should work too. I used to run 2x GTX 770 on a 525W PSU without issues.

Personally I favor Nvidia due to their better driver support.

If you decide on a GTX 970, maybe look for used ones or open box models as some people got rid of theirs when the 3.5 GB VRAM debacle was in full force. I've got two of them and the memory issue isn't really anything to worry about as long as you don't play in 4K.

What resolution is your monitor?
What games do you play?
What games do you want to play?
What is the model number of the power supply?
What is the price of the MSI 290 and the MSI 970?

You had no problems with 2x GTX 770 with a 525W PSU?? How many W does one need?

Does that 970 come with the Witcher 3 bundle? Are you interested in playing that game? If not, check and see how much you'd be able to sell that code for in your country.

The only thing that would concern me with the 290 is your PSU. While the 290 can run on a decent 550W PSU, I'm afraid yours is not considered high quality. The 970 could probably do fine on it though.

I dont think it comes with the witcher 3. Yes I am interessted in playing GTAV.

So you are saying that if i buy the 290 I need a new PSU? Is the 290 better than the 970?

Your PSU might be able to handle the 290, but to be safe you'd probably want to upgrade it.

On average at 1080p, the 970 is faster than the 290. This seems hold true in GTA V, according to GameGPU as well as PClab, Guru3D, and NordicHardware. SweClockers found the 290 to be slightly faster, however.

Its up to you if you feel the performance difference is worth the price difference.
