Need help on finding a switch

I am going to network 32 machines. I need to know the cheapest switch that I can buy that will allow me to disable and enable certain ports on the switch. I assume I need a managed switch but can someone recommend a cheap one. I do mean cheap, it does not have to have all the nuts and bolts, I just need to be able to disable certain ports.

Good luck, check out ebay for deals sometimes. You do want a managed switch for sure.

Why not just fire the employee that's making you need to disable their access? 🙂

You could also set up a firewall and disable access by MAC address or IP.

What exactly do you consider cheap? I just saw a TWO port switch that was priced near 400 dollars, and it wasn't even managed!

D-Link 24-ports are as low as 315 at cdw.com. Cheapest 48-port is a Netgear for 1140. 32-port seems to be an odd number.

Yes, a managed switch will allow you to configure individual ports, among other things. You can find managed switches on Ebay cheaper than anywhere else that I know of. If you can afford a new switch, Dell switches aren't bad and are reasonably priced. We have one that is manageable and it works well.

i'v picked up some great stuff super cheap..but you need to know what your doing, remember to factor in the auction house overhead, shipping, etc.
ideally you shoe pick an auction near you where you can go see the stuff before you bid on it.

if you do all of that, you can get mightly lucky and pick up some barely (if at all) used stuff for cheap.

Well, 36-port is far more logical. In the serie '0-12-24' is 36 the next item, not 32. Since ports are usually grouped per 12, 36 would make a lot of sense..

On-topic: I would certainly look at sites like E-bay, there are lots of second-hand 24- or 36-port switches.

By the way: are you after a 10/100 Switch, or is 10Mbit enough? And what about uplinks, GBIC?

What about this switch from dell: PowerConnect 3248 Switch . Will this be good enough to serve my needs.
