I bought a new system consisting of:

Asus P5K-SE
E6550
2GB Kingston 667
1950 Pro 256mb
Audigy 2 ZS (re using this)
Seagate 250Gb SATA

The p5K has onboard audio , so i disabled it as i wanted to use my audigy. However , after installing Windows XP , i found that certain audio devices were already installed.

They are:

Audio Codecs
Legacy Audio Drivers
Legacy Video Capture Devices
Media Control Devices
Video Codecs

I can't uninstall them or disable them as there is no option to do so. In the Sounds and Devices panel , it says "No audio device is installed" even when these things are already in Device manager.

Can't select anything else , can't install anything else either.

Best part is , the Audigy 2 drivers will not detect my Audigy sound card and i cant install them.

I tried installing the onboard audio but all i get it "Not enough resources" or something close to it and till now , still no sound.

Help? I formatted 6-7 times already , first with Audigy installed , second i took it out , third i tried enabling onboard audio before installing XP etc etc etc

I'm going nuts...

weird...anyway, those things aren't related to the sound card. they are the codecs and drivers needed to decode audio.

There's no need to uninstall the legacy drivers. I have a similar listing under the Device Manager:

Audio Codecs
Creative Game Port
Creative SB Audigy 2 ZS (WDM)
Legacy Audio Drivers
Legacy Video Capture Devices
Media Control Devices
Video Codecs

If I recall correctly, there's also no need to disable onboard audio (although you can if you want). If you have multiple audio devices, you can just pick which one is used if you go to the options in the Volume Control.

Are you sure you installed the correct drivers? The one I used was called "SBAX_WBUP2_LB_2_09_0016.exe".

dont remember what i did but it asked for drivers now , i used those same drivers , the SBAX WBUP2 LB 2 09 0016.exe , no ! marks or anything but when i try to play an mp3 file it still says my audio device is in use , not installed or has a conflict.

any ideas?

Did you remember to change the mixer device from onboard audio to the Audigy? I'm also not clear on if you had previously already installed the SBAX_WBUP2_LB_2_09_0016.exe drivers, or if you just installed those.

Do you see configurations similar to this?

It sound that you have IRQ conflict and might be Ghost Installation in the device manger.

Take out the audigy. and see if your first get the sound going using the Mobo Sound Chip.

Tried it , doesn't seem to work. XP still installs the Legacy Audio Device or whatever and still , no sound. I downloaded updated drivers and such to no avail.

I'm sorry to even suggest that but... did you connect your speakers, and are you sure they work?

Then I would do the Repair Install of Windows with the On Board Audio enabled, and make sure that the Sound Drivers are the first drivers to be installed.

I would reset the CMOS and set everything manually in BIOS before the Repair Install.

Good luck!

Never mind , i somehow fixed it?

1) Disable Onboard audio , remove PCI Sound card (audigy 2) , remove all traces of audio devices in Device manager(except for the Legacy ones , cant remove those anyway)

2) Install drivers for realtek audio from Asus.com WITHOUT any audio devices enabled/installed.

3) Windows now has the correct drivers , so i just enabled on board sound in BIOS and booted up as per normal , now there's sound!

Pretty logical solution if you ask me , gave me grief for so many days : (

Now i'm too scared to use my audigy 2 , don't wanna screw it up again... bah onboard sound sucks.
