Need help on deciding which cpu to get.

Im in the process of building a new computer. It will mainly be for gaming. I have been having trouble deciding on which cpu and motherboard to get. So far I have been looking at the P4 3.0c with the Abit IC7-MAX3. But I may decide to go with amd as they are a bit cheaper. So, what is an amd cpu/motherboard combo that is comparable to this one performance wise and "overclockability"?

Ati Radeon 9600XT
CDRW 52x24x52
WD1200JB 120gb 8mb cache

Getting a 2500+ and doing an easy oc to FSB 200 will put you at the P4 3.0 speeds. I use a Shuttle (nForce 2) to do the oc'ing. Make sure you use a decent HSF, and monitor your temps via MB monitor if this is the route you choose to go.
