Need help on deciding between Nvidia GTX 550Ti or XFX ATI 6770

Ok so...I need some help here, as I have not been involved in the graphics card department for some time.

So, to make a long story short. I have an exchange of a video card from bestbuy I purchased in the $210 category.

Which card would you advise getting? They carry a PNY GTX 550Ti (never thought much about PNY) but this is the card I picked up. OR the XFX ATI Radeon HD 6770 1GB. I am however, not opening the card until I get some feedback. Ive typically always stuck with nvidia but.....meh, I am not sure PNY is a good company I want to deal with(for possible future issues).

I am looking for an objective answer here. Which card is better? (cooler, use less power, faster, etc)

On a side note: I run a Core2Duo system and my previous card was a BFG 8800GT. My mobo is pci-e 2.0, that isnt going to be a problem with 2.1 cards is it?

The 550 Ti is a bit faster, the 6770 uses less power. They should both run cool, although that 550 might have the edge with its cooler.

The Geforce, unless your PSU can't handle it or you're extremely concerned about heat.

Really? A 460 is faster than the 550? Yeah, they only had limited supply there. Are those better choices? They told me anything they didnt have in store they could order to have shipped.

Between a 5770 and 450 you probably wouldn't notice the difference with your Core 2 Duo, so I'd say get the cheaper of the two.

But if you can grab a 6850 or 460 for not much more, those are better options by far.

I am not paying anything. Its essentially a $210 store credit. Bestbuy, amazingly enough, because BFG went out of business said they would exchange my 4 YEAR OLD 8800GT that just failed yesterday. (because it had a lifetime warranty) :) They made a call to corporate or something and approved it. I was in shock.

So I have $210 to buy any video card I want. I am just trying to decide on the best purchase.

thats extremely blunt of you to say. Intel was not always better and nvidia is not "BETTER". "ATI" now AMD has pretty good drivers right now, nvidia and ATI have been neck and neck these last couple generations.

They're both good these days but I'd pick the 460 or 550 just so it's an nvidia-to-nvidia move with less chance of driver debris madness. If you were upgrading from AMD then it would have that same slight edge as my choice.

Yeah, the GTX 460 1GB should be a bit faster than the 6850, but you can't go wrong with either one and both are better than the 550.

Best Buy generally offers an optional warranty that will offer the same protection.

Well I wasn't sure if you could use that store credit on anything else. If only the video card then get the best you can.

Yeah, thanks. Based on the posts, I will most likely be returning this 550ti and ordering a 460.

Actually, overall the 460 is not faster than the 6850. It uses more power and, while the GPU runs very cool, the same can't be said for the power stages. That said, I agree that you really can't go wrong with either one, and they both are noticeably faster than the 550.

6770/5770 is same core,GTX 550 Ti core have good for overclock more than 1Ghz
Gigabyte GTX 550 Ti OC default core is 970Mhz~

I'd grab a GTX 460 1GB. I have 2 of them in SLI and they're both heavily overclocked and every game I play including Crysis 2 runs smooth as butter and I only have a E8400 Dual core.

Grab a 460 1GB for 140 dollars or soo... best bang for buck video card.

He has to buy from Best Buy. I think for that price the HD 6850 (seems to be $189 or $199) on their website is the best; its slightly faster than the gtx 460 1GB.

Failing that get the gtx 460.

This is wrong. The 6850 is faster; if only slightly.

i am on a 550Ti right now..

in my config its powering 2 24's i use as my sides.
Its not a bad card.. runs fairly cool in a tight cramped spot below my SLI cards.

As for performance... you should really pay a bit more and get a 460GTX 1gb at least.. if you cant get a 560, and if your going to use it as a primary card.

Im fairly sure a 460GTX will beat it, but it requires 2 - 6pin plugs. which i did not want to invest, vs 1 which the 550ti takes.
