Need help on choosing a mobo/cpu...

OK, I'm going to build my first computer, but I need some advice on which motherboard and cpu to get. I've been doing a lot of research on hardware sites and newegg.com, but there are WAY too many numbers in the names of everything. Can someone just tell me which motherboard out there is the best to get? I've looked at countless reviews and benchmarks, but hey usually just confuse me more. Which is the most reliable? I want the best of the best (without having to spend over $250), and I want it to have PCI-e slots.

Also, what is a good processor (AMD Athlon 3200+ or above or Pentium 4 3.2 or above) to fit this motherboard?

Thanks for the help guys.

Currently, AMD's overall performance's ahead of Intel, so go for the reasonably priced Venice cored Athlon64 3200+ (it overclocks well too).

If you're looking to use a single Graphics card, then a good PCI-E mobo for that CPU would be the ASUS A8N-E,

otherwise if you're planning to use the SLI feature, then the ASUS A8N-SLI Deluxe is an excellent mobo for that CPU.

OK, how would this mobo and cpu do?

ASUS A8N-E Socket 939 NVIDIA nForce4 Ultra ATX AMD Motherboard
and
AMD Athlon 64 3200+ Venice Integrated into Chip FSB 512KB L2 Cache Socket 939 Processor - Retail

Would those work together? Is Venice the best core to get with my budget? These would both work fine for high end gaming and video editing, right? (with a Radeon x800 XL or Gefore 6600 GT?)
