Need help on buying a graphics card for my laptop

I have a Dell Inspiron 1720, and I believe it can take PCI Express video cards. I just don't know which one would be good. I've read up so many different reviews, I just don't want to make the mistake of buying the wrong one, so I'd like some input from all you out there that can help me. Thanks in advance



Oh and if you know of places where I can purchase one, besides Ebay, that would be awesome

They are putting 8800gts cards in new oem notebooks as we speak, but I doubt you can buy one for a few months.

I looked up your lap top it should have a 8600m gt in it . Does it?

Will the 8600gt fit in my Dell Inspiron E1505 ? If not, can you recommend a card that will surely fit ? It currently have a ATi X1400 256mb hm... Is it worth it to change it in the first place ?

My dad customized mine and removed the graphics card. It only has an integrated graphics accelerator on the board but that doesn't do shit. He did it cause he didn't want me gaming on the laptop

And I'm not looking to spend close to 200 was hoping for like an earlier video card for around 100 maybe

Video cards cannot be changed like on desktops... about the only option you will have is to purchase the 8600 again from Dell...

There's too many variables to consider...such as power draw.. heat.. etc. etc...

But it seems to be a bit more pricey than you want to spend (although you could always keep the spares or sell them again)

He means that his laptop has Mobile PCI-e, the MXM "standard". Laptops are far from having this standard across all computers, such like desktops, but it's growing. However, Dell has a nasty habit of making its MXM often proprietary for its cards (as in, the shape of the card has to fit the chassis). The problem with MXM is that the cards are pretty hard to get, and if you find one, it's pretty damn expensive, too. There are a lot of factors (does the laptop give it enough juice, is it MXM I, II, III, or IV, will it fit the laptop chassis, will it run cool enough to run stably?) that prevents the upgrading of graphics cards in laptops.

I guess if Dell is willing to ship you cards, I suppose that might work, but no guarantees, it's nothing like a desktop.

Perhaps you should be talking to him to get a graphics card re-installed.

First things first, the only way you can get a GPU for you laptop is through Dell. They use propriety even though it is MXM, it's still a dell only card.

And second no version of the 1720 come with an 8700m GT or and 8800mGTX, so the best you are going to be able to get is an 8600m GT. Also te Inspirons use the GDDR2 version of the card, not sure if it could handle the GDDR3 version heating and ventilation wise. And you WILL be voiding your warranty by installing the card yourself. Best to get in touch with Dell on this issue.

No. The E1505 cannot be upgraded. I looked into upgrading my E1505 and Dell told me it only came with the x1400 and the x1300. the 17xx Dell's can take 7300's from what I was told.

The Dell Dude told you wrong! My e1505 I bought last April has a 7300 Go in it - the only other option except for on-board was an x1300. Now, the same E6600 model could get an x1400. But like the above post stated, they are all about the same, with the x1400 marginally faster all around.

BTW, the 7300 Go is just a 7300GS clocked at 300/600. It plays most games OK at lower res/reduced detail. Older games (like Far Cry) run rather well at higher details with native res at 1280x800.

You're basically stuck - no other upgrade path is available

There are upgradeable laptops made by Asus (Asus C90, for example) that were made for this sort of question. Just throwing it out there that most laptops are NOT meant to be upgradeable past the RAM, HDD, and maybe, CPU.

Most laptops weren't meant to be upgradeable, period.

I have seen many with the CPU soldered on, and you might be able to replace the ram and HDD, but thats only because they are selling customized ones and needed a way to install different models... Those same laptops with the soldered CPUs usually get their warranty voided if you upgrade the ram or hard drive.

Oh and I can get a graphics card, I'd just have to get it through Dell. So we'll see how that goes.
