I just read a very good post about OCing and now I really know how all these OCing stuff works generally*.

-Raising FSB causes problem for ram speed, so we have to OC the ram (I heard someone said that we can downclock the ram, how does that work? Shall I OC the ram or downclock the ram if I want to OC AMD64 san Diego ? )

-the post said that there are 3 method to use related to OC.
1. FSB:RAM Ratio
2. Overclocking your RAM or Downclock your ram mentioned by elipse
3. Buying RAM rated at a Higher Speed

For the experienced OCer, which method do you use?

The post said that most common method of overclocking is through the BIOS; however, most retail computer manufacturers use motherboards and BIOSes that do not support overclocking. You won't be able to access the settings you need from the BIOS. There are utilities that will allow you to overclock from your desktop.

For the experienced OCer, which utility do you use to OC? (please name them)

Do I need to lower the Multiplier in order to raise my FSB ? Or I can raise my FSB without lowering the multiplier?

Thank you for your help.

Which San Diego do you have? What mobo?

Generally overclocking in bios is best. Windows based overclocking tools are all flaky and frequently cause lockups and crashes, but I do use ClockgenNF4 to increase the FSB in windows. I don't use it to change voltages or multis, I do all that in bios.

And all the best clocks on A64's are using a memory divider running ram at less that FSB, this seems to be especially true with my SD 3700+, if I overclock the ram more than 220mhz I can only run the CPU at 2.7ghz, but if I keep ram under 220mhz I can run the CPU at 2.8ghz. And the early results seem to indicate that overclocking the ram on San Diegos doesn't increase the memory bandwidth as much as it did with Winchesters. These things may or maynot be addressed with future bios.

And IMHO buying high speed rated ram is a waste on A64's

Run a divider.

Simply the best way for A64 OCing.

bump to the 2 previous. Divider and BIOS clocking is best. Except highly rated RAM will definitey improve performance; how could it not, when you are giving the CPU more access to RAM?
