need help NOW: setting up small lan

i'm over at a friend's house and i brought my 16port synoptics lattishub (that i got for free) and we're trying to create a small (2 or 3 computer) network. the hub powers up ok, all the lights above the ports in use are green, and the led's on the nic's are flashing like there's traffic. we made sure tcp/ip, ipx/spx, and netbui were installed on all comps, the drivers are installed for the nic's ok, too.

but we still can't make a lan game with starcraft and the "entire network" isn't accessible.

the hub was a hand out from a local high school that didn't want it any more because the computer guy sad it's "bad". i didn't care, i figure, its worth a shot, right? and the thing is powering on and responding to installed cards. but there must be something im forgetting. this is my first attempt at setting up a network and theres no one else around any more knowledged to help us out. i know enough about computers and stuff to know that everything is hooked up right. but i dont know enough about networking (and the software involved) to make a definite ruling that it IS the hub and not something im doing wrong.

eventually, i'm going to be setting up a small (20 or so ppl) lan party here in town (whether i need to get a new hub/switch or not) and i need to make sure this hub either does for sure work, or definitely does NOT work so i can chuck it. cuz i dont want to throw it away unless i am completely sure it's the hub that's not working

thnx tons in advance

Don't tell me, let me guess. Its an 8 port hub. 🙁

If so, it isn't 10 Base T. Its the pre-standard LatticeNet. If so, the differences in the voltages, signaling and impedances are just great enough so that it will work intermittently.
The only card that supported it was the original etherlink2. There were 3 or 4 jumpers that needed to be set in order to accommodate it.
Ran into the POS about 10 years ago at a small office. After figuring out that it was IBF, I had to find a card that would work.

Anyway, let me know. I may have a friend that still has information on the old hubs.

Regards;

Doug

<< Try linking the 2 machines using a crossover cable. If it works the problem is probably the hub. >>

Word...leave them setup exactly as you have them...if they talk with a crossover, its the hub.

If they don't, somethings wrong in the setup and you can move forward from there.

we didnt get it to work. its still over there, tho, so we could try later. but yeah, i would've tried a crossover, but we didnt have one and i wasnt exactly sure how to make one. which wires do you cross?

Here's a little chart. It's on the right side of the page.

Edit: Actually this is an even better guide.
