Need help networking with a router

I am tiring to connect 2 computer both have XP. I have them both plugged in a Linksys DSL router. When I try to set up a network it never connects to the other computer. Any help is appreciated.

Let assume that your Drivers, and Protocols are Installed correctly, and there is no Hardware conflict.
Let assume that you are using the correct CAT5 cables.

For the initial setting, disable active virus scanners, and any software firewall (including Microsoft embedded firewall).

Setting the sharing, Opening accounts, and set passwords is next.
