My friend is getting cable. He has a four year old PowerBook 1400cs(OS 9.0) and a PC using Win2k. He'll be using a traditional setup, cable modem to ethernet hub, hub to computers. Will the computers be able to see each other on the network? He wants to be able to transfer files from his Mac to his PC. Will he have to buy specific PC-Mac networking software?

Yes, he will have to buy software for either the Mac or the PC. I have used Thursby Software's DAVE a few times and it works very well. If you do not need to worry about sharing printers and don't need to connect the Mac to a Windows NT Domain (not likely in a home enviroment) then Thursby also offers a cheaper product (MacSOHO?) that allows file transfers. Connectix (of the Virtual PC fame) also offer a similar product (DoubleTalk).

If you don't want to spend the $$ on DAVE, there is a slightly primitive yet highly effective way of transferring files from Mac to PC...use Hotline. Set up a server on one computer, connect to it using Hotline, give access to the appropriate files, and bingo. You have yourself file transfers at slightly slower rates but with shareware. Beats spending the money on DAVE.

Q. How do I add the services for Macintosh?

A. Follow the instructions below:

Start up Control Panel (Start - Settings - Control Panel)
Double click on Network, and select the Services Tab
Click Add and select "Services for Macintosh"
Put in the NT CD and click continue
Click close to finish
Once copying is complete the AppleTalk Protocol Properties sheet will be displayed, and you should choose which Network card it is to be bound to. If there are Macintosh currently connected then and AppleTalk zone will be displayed, if not you will need to perform the following
- Select the Routing Tab, and check "enable routing" if you have multiple network adapters
- For each network card you should choose the AppleTalk Phase 2 network number and default zone (which can be added by clicking the Add button at the bottom)
After the configuration is completed you will be prompted to reboot your machine
Once the machine has restarted you will have Macintosh file and print services.

Hotline adds a lot of overhead when you could simply use an ftp server program. Serve-U or even (gasp!) IIS 5 on Win2K (don't really recommend IIS if it's going to be publicly accessible). There are many others available.

For the Mac, I believe there's a few as well.
