Need help networking one Linksys Router to Another....

Normally, i don't think i would be having this much trouble, but the situation is kinda weird at this church so i need some help...

Router 1 - Linksys BEFSR41 connected via cable (brighthouse networks)

They have been using this setup for a few years and have most of the church networked.

In the youth group room, i set up my boss's old computers, both PII/256mb/20gb with Windows98 (first ed.) for the kids to use... I happen to have a second Linksys BEFSR41 (Router 2) which i want to use to connect both computers, how can i go about doing this?

The current setup is a follows;

Cable Modem --> Router 1 ----(via patch cable)--> Youth Group Room

and i need it to be;

Cable Modem --> Router 1 ----(via patch cable)--> Router 2 in Youth Group Room --> Computer 1 & Computer 2

Can this be done using the equipment and cables we currently have?

From what i recall in the past, you need a crossover cable to network one router to another, is this correct?

um why dont you just disable the routing on router #2, make it a switch.....you'll run into a double NAT issue there. The External - Internal translation is already done from the cable modem to the outside interface of the router, the 2nd router will be trying to do an additional translation, thinking the output from the original inside interface is an external address, when in fact, it isnt.

No need for 2 layer 3 devices on that network

Excellent, thanks... I neglected to mention one problem...

Is it possible to do this without any physical nor web interface access to Router 1?

Its locked in a closet downstairs and no one can find the key (i wish im kidding)

You do not need to change any thing in Router 1, the interface changes are only in Router2.

ahhhh ok.... read something on that page wrong the first time through 🙂 thanks!

One last question, the Router #2 should be set as 'Router' not 'Gateway' correct?

BTW: Even if you keep the NAT enabled on BEFSR41 #2, it will still work. Just set up #2 to dish out numbers in the 192.168.2.x (assuming that #1 is still 192.168.1.x). This also means that the computers on #1 will NOT be able to see the computers on #2.
