Need help negotiating a salary

So i went to an interview and apparently the lab manager is quite excited about me and told me that i was kind of the person she is looking for. The problem is that late in our conversation she asked me how much I make at my current position, so i told her without catching myself and stating some ambigious range or what not. Then she made some notes (crap!) and told me that they will get back to me soon and i might have to interview with the president (the position that I applied to was apparently pretty high up) who will no doubt already have knowledge of how much I currently make. Thing is that For this postion I would like to make at least about $3k /yr more than my current position and up to $7K more in order to get a more fair market value for my skills and experience.

If he tries to match my current pay instead of what I am really worth, how do i counter it without sounding arrogant?

It's usually as simple as, "I was really looking to make <insert range here> as I feel it's what the current market suggests." Something like that. It's not arrogant. They're expecting you to negotiate, and if you just acquiesce and say, "Ok, that's fine" it might actually work against you; people want to see initiative.

Is this a job at the same place you work now, or at a different company?

Different company ... Much Much smaller than the company that i work for now, but a whole lot friendlier and easier to deal with.

Well, in order to steal you away from your current job, they should pay you more. Assuming this, I think the president would have enough common sense to realize this and make you a competitive offer.

Ummm... I don't think any company would expect a person to change jobs to make the exact same amount they're making at their current job unless there is some compelling reason for them to leave. I wouldn't worry about it, they'll offer you at least $5k more than you're making (unless you make like $30k a year)

I'm terrible at negoitiating Salary... I always end up with less than I should have gotten...

My advice... ask for more than you think is reasonable...

I is not really reasonable for them to offer what you are making now or less and expect you to move jobs for that. Their response will tell you a lot about the company. If you are good for them, and they want you, they will offer more than what you are making now.

Aren't you the IT guy who's making >$100k a year thanks to >10% raises nearly every year?
