Need help!! My Abit KR7A-RAID turns on now, but doesn't do anything after that!!

Hello all.

I've got a big problem. The USB suddenly died on my Asus A7V-266E board, so I ordered an Abit KR7A-RAID. I have it all in the case and it should be booting up fine. But it just won't turn on! I press the power button, the fans turn for about a half a second, and then it turns off. I've checked all the connections and they seem to be fine. The standby power indicator light (D14) is on the whole time, so I know the board has power. This is the first system in my rigs profile if you want to see the specs. I added a CD burner that's not in there yet and the mobo is obviously changed. It is pretty much fully loaded.

All right, that problem is solved. Turns out that my Swiftech heatsink was shorting the motherboard around the mounting holes. My Asus had build in washers, so I didn't think to check with the new one.

But the problem now is that I don't get any video signal. And the keyboard won't let me turn on numlock (maybe it's not getting power then?). The keyboard lights do flash when it first turns on, though. The PCI slots at least get power because my network card light turns on. All the drives get power too. Any suggestions on what the problem could be? I tried the suggestions in the link posted.

I'd greatly appreciate all help!!

Thanks,
Swan

some things to try

clear the cmos
reseat the ram/vidcard/cpu
make sure the board isnt shorted out against the case
unplug everything except ram/vid card/cpu and see if it will boot

My first problem is fixed but I've got a new one. Read the 3rd paragraph in my first post please.

Thanks for the help so far,
Swan

Update: I tried the mobo completely out of the case. That was with just a PCI video card (known working), one memory module (working when I starting with this Abit), the CPU (XP 1900+ working when I started), the heatsink (should be no longer causing problems), and a keyboard.

Does this mean the motherboard is shot?

Do you have a low RPM quiet fan on the Swiftech? Abit BIOS has the no fan- shut down feature enabled. A low RPM fan looks like a bad fan and shuts everything down. Plug a case fan into the fan header, plug the hsf fan into another fan header and go into the BIOS and disable the shut down feature, then re-plug the fans into the correct headers.

Good Luck.
