I am trying to install this ornament so that the top is in contact with the ceiling like so . If you take a look at the mounting mechanism , however, you will notice that the ornament must slide down into its final resting spot; therefore it will be impossible for me to install this ornament in the manner that I desire to with standard mounting mechanism.

Any suggestions on what modifications/flashes of ingenuity will help me get the job done?

Thanks!

I'd just turn the mounts sideways. You could even use a chisel to make them flush with the back. Then just use molly bolts to give you a screw head, just slide it to the left or right to mount it.

Take those mounting brackets off and reattach them sideways. You will have to chisel out a little wood to make them flush again.

Is there a fucking echo in here?

Gorilla glue for ornament.

The disadvantage with adheasives is that you will wreck the plaster if you ever need to take it off. With screws at least you are left with two smaller holes that you can polyfill later.

I have no idea how much you tassel weighs (is it made from hardwood??).

Is the wall plasterboard (with or without skim) on timber stud work? Plasterboard on metal C-section studs? Blockwork or brickwork with plaster (or plasterboard)?

Bang the wall with your fist; if it sounds hollow, keep on banging moving along the wall until you feel something solid behind. That's the stud. (The same applies to the ceiling except it will be a joist, not a stud). In the UK, studs are usually at 450mm or 600mm centres.

A solid brick or block work wall will sound 'solid' no matter where you bang.

Presumably your ceiling is plasterboard (with or without skim) on timber joists.

If its brickwork or blockwork use rawplugs or an anchor screw. If you are fixing to a stud partition wall make sure you that you fix it to the studs (either timber or metal). For metal studs use self-tapping screws. For timber studs, normal timber screws will do. If you fix the tassel to the plasterboard only, be it on the wall or the ceiling, the fixing may rip right out due to the tassel's weight.

The method of fixing can be as Locut0s or spidey07 suggested. Or you fix the tassel to the ceiling instead of the wall and slide it on using the mounting you linked in the OP.

Oh and corbels are stone (at least in the UK they are). The timber equivalent is a tassel. I think some people call them braggers as well.

If you are feeling brave, use No More Nails (or something equivalent) adhesive.

Edit: make sure that you don't hit any cables or pipework. Cables will be unlikely at that level (unless you have h/l electrical sockets, TV aerial socket, etc.), but with pipework you never know. 😀

It's called a corbel.

That really does help him attach it 😉
