I am putting in a new exchange server, to replace our old one and I'm stumbling through it.
I think I have win2K server and exchange setup correctly, now I need to get the old calenders and email off the old server and into the new one.
I get confused with the migration wizard, Is it possible just to copy the individual folders? If so where are the stored, I can't seem to find them.
Should I try another way. BTW it's only 6 users.

Thanks!!!!!

Nope, you can't just copy folders. Exchange embeds it's messges too deeply for that.

You have two options.

1: Bring up the new server in the same Exchange "Site" (collection of Exchange servers) as the old one, get the two hooked up together, then move the mailboxes using the standard Exchange admin tools.

2: Create a PST file for each user and create sub-folders for their inbox, sent items, calendar, contacts, etc. Copy everything from the Exchange server onto their PST folders. Bring up the new server, get them logged in and then move everything OUT of the PST file into the new mail server.

For this small of a network, #2 would probably be simpler. But be sure to keep the old server around and don't do anything rash until you're SURE that everything copied OK.

One hint: If you're logged into the domain as Administrator, you can create a mail profile to open up any mailbox, independant of who owns it. Useful for this kind of import/export.

There is a way to rebuild your exchange server, but you need to make sure of the following:

1- Domain name must be the same as previous Exchange server if in a Domain network, or same workgroup name.
2- Exchanger server container name must be the same as the previous Exchange server.
3- Install Exchange server in the same partition setup as the previous Exchange server. (ie: installs of the exchange folders and data folders.)
4- Copy over the mdbdata files containing the private and public data stores (make sure they are in the same partition/drive letter as previous Exchange server.

You'll have to rebuilt each and every one of the individual mailboxes, and if in a domain network, you will have to let the new Exchange server get its GAL from a domain controller.

thanks, I guess I was making it harder than it is.

so far all mail/calenders have been switched to the new server. I'm copying all the shared docs tonight. I hope to have all online tomorrow

Thanks again?

PS would anyone know of a good win2k Server or exchange book? like "xyz for dummies"?
