okay so yeah, this is a Lian Li PCV-800

the way the PSU mounts into the chassis is a bit weird to say the least. it goes back first into the front...yeah..

so when choosing a PSU for this I have to be careful.

Should I make sure to ONLY get a PSU that has a fan that would have the exhaust blowing out the perforated holes in the front of the case?

there are exhaust holes underneath the PSU to accomodate bottom-facing fans (PIC) and HERE is a picture of the PSU mounting area

so what should I do, go with whatever PSU is best or go with something that uses the front-faced vents?

Bwahahaha! OMG!!! Your subtitle says it all! They ought to shoot the SOB that came up with that design!

It'll be nice in the winter though -- make a nice hand warmer -- if you can stand the noise.

Anyway, I guess you won't want a PSU with LED fans...

Um.. on second thought, do you have an eBay account?

yes, i have an ebay account

it shouldnt be a problem as far as heat goes, itll be under my tv

you're right, i dont want any LED lights, but if you've seen i already have a topic asking how to kill LEDs off ;)

as far as noise goes....im trying to get really silent parts to compensate here.the bottom line is that this wont be as noisy as my current computer and as long as its not noisier than my xbox360 then ill be fine...

At least the case allows for both types of PSU: those that have a 120mm fan and intake from the bottom, and those with an 80mm fan and intake thru the front (or rear as mounted in this case). Both will exhaust thru the front of the PC-V800. I don't think you can mount the PSU any other way in that case. With an HTPC case, you're not supposed to be sitting right in front of it anyway - be quite a stretch to reach from the couch to the HTPC to warm one's hands...

Just put a reasonably quiet PSU in there like a Seasonic S12 or that Enhance ENP-5140GH (review here) from eWiz.com and you won't have a problem. And with the efficiencies of either of those, the exhaust air won't be much above ambient anyway - more likely to cool your hands rather than warm them. I don't think either have LED fans... ;)

Man it's a shame to have to cut on a case right out of the box - those exhaust grills on the back have got to go! What was L-L thinking anyway??? And BTW, I have a couple of 60-80mm fan adapters if you want to "pump those exhausts up".

re. rear fans: I'd turn one around for an intake and put the other in a drawer as a backup for when the one you'll be using wears out. Or just cover one of the 60mm holes up - as it'll be more of a short-circuit for air to the exhausts anyway - maybe you could duct air from one to somewhere it's needed... Where the heck is the 80mm fan in there anyway - I haven't been able to see it in any of the pics I've found? Is it in the top? Here's the way Pic to use the other 60mm mount but with a 60 to 80mm adapter rather than the 80 to 92 that I used on my PSU. Up to you to figure out which is best to use for which purpose.

The problem with the PowerStreams is that they are nearly 7" deep while the standard spec for ATX PSUs is 5.5" deep (which the Enhance is exactly, BTW). The extra length may not cut it in that case - that would significantly overhang the mobo. Also, they aren't particularly designed for quiet and since they will exhaust right into the room... A solid 400W is more than enough for any system short of SLI or whatever they call the ATI getup.

ok im gonna get the enermax. its cheaper than the Enhance on ebay right now ;)

btw. so it doesnt matter if i have an exhaust pointing out the front? i just wanna make sure the airflow is being used properly (since the enermax/enhance dont have the fans on the backs)

The PSU exhaust will go out the front regardless of the fan setup in the PSU - that's the way the case is designed (unless you manage to mount the PSU in some orientation that god never intended). I thought I made that point in my first post here - yes, I did!

Is the small savings on a lesser Enermax on eBay going to compensate for the lack of warranty, etc. The ENP-5140GH at $56. + shipping from ewiz via Froogle is now my standard recommendation for anything less than a SLI system - it's just that good (unless JG was sandbagged with a ringer...)!

seasonics will work on that case.(sig)

edit: they work perfectly actually, intake is on the bottom and exhaust goes right out the back, its like they were designed for each other. although the cables kinda get in the way and they have an excessive amount of connecters.

A Seasonic for cheap? I'll have to hop over there and see for myself...

Nope, nothing there that compares to the Enhance for similar or less money. Didn't think so...

if you can get that for under $90-$100 that would be a pretty good deal.

edit: found your case on newegg, it would work fine in that...it takes a bit of room, but should work. im not sure if the psu has to be flipped or not, ill look at mine and how it sits. but it will suck air from that vented area, and blow it right out the back like it should or front in your case, should make a great hand warmer like stated before.

Good luck - you'll need sniping tools and to know how to use them to snag a Seasonic on auction... you can check ended auction and I doubt you'll find one of those going for under $100. Great if you can though. GL!

Seasonic S12 should cool your hands as it should be drawing mostly ambient air from the bottom and not raising the temp of it much - very efficient (like the Enhance).

i have amazing ebay timing, i seem to always get the low end of the price range when i buy something. i just got the x2 5000+ for the lowest its been on ebay so far right now and the lian li was like $86 which is below cost as well.
